The City of Carlsbad is asking for input concerning what exactly they should do to improve the coastal zone from the Warm Water jetties south to Mansano Drive.
“We have a lot of opportunities along our coastline to improve safety, especially for bicyclists and pedestrians, ease traffic flow and create a better experience overall,” said Assistant City Manager Gary Barberio, who is overseeing a variety of coastal improvements in Carlsbad. “Before we make any changes, we want to make sure we have considered the input of everyone who uses the area.”

Nothing better outlines the outrageous lengths to which LA based shopping mall developer Caruso Affilitated will go in their campaign to obfuscate the truth about their development plans than their own disinformation ads that have been running non-stop on the web and local TV.
This edit above is in support of building a shopping mall on the shores of the Agua Hedionda lagoon. Did you hear the word “mall” used? Or shopping? Or acres of parking lots? Or anything at all related to what the developer hopes to do with the property? No. You didn’t. That’s because Caruso Affiliated would rather not mention all that. We also find an LA developer’s use of the word “our” when referring to the Carlsbad City Council a bit misleading as well. Talk about “outside interests.”
For a reminder of what Caruso Affiliated shopping malls looks like, check out their own photo of The Grove below. It was probably named after the nursery grown trees they sandwiched into holes in the concrete outside of Pottery Barn Kids. Nice use of open space, huh?
We believe that placing a shopping mall on the shores of Carlsbad’s Hedionda Lagoon is such a ridiculously dumb idea that we’ve found it difficult to even comment. Exactly why it’s foolish seems so obvious as to make listing the reasons redundant. We’ll cut to the chase: The Carlsbad City Council believes putting a mall on the lagoon is such a good idea that they approved Los Angeles based developer Rick Caruso’s plans without even asking the citizens of Carlsbad to vote. Luckily a group of Carlsbad citizens (Citizens For North County) believe we should vote on it. That’s why they’re out getting signatures for a referendum that will overturn the Carlsbad City Council’s approval and put the Hedionda Lagoon Mall up for vote to everyone in Carlsbad.
If you think the citizens of Carlsbad should have a voice in deciding the future of the community and a beautiful piece of open space on the shores of the Hedionda Lagoon, then you should sign the referendum.
This afternoon (Friday, September 11, 2015) you can sign the petition at the corner of Highland and Basswood from 2 PM to 6 PM. Or stop by the Dove Library (at Dove and El Camino Real) to sign. All your signature means is that you’d like the people of Carlsbad to have a vote on the Mall.

Volunteer opportunities for the Lifestyle & Fitness Festival, taking place on Saturday, July 11, include checking in athletes, providing race bibs and handing out goodie bags. Body marking, assisting with timing at the finish line and passing out refreshments at the hospitality booth are among the volunteer opportunities on race day on Sunday, July 12.

If you’re going to ride your bike to work one day this year (you should be doing it every day, of course) then make it Bike To Work Day (Friday, May 15, 2015) because the City of Carlsbad and the San Diego Association of Governments will hook you up with some free goodies, maybe even a T-shirt at their “pit stop” at triangle park aka Frazee Beach at Carlsbad Boulevard and Pine Avenue.
“The City of Carlsbad encourages those who live and work in and around the city to join neighbors, friends and coworkers in celebrating Bike to Work Day with us,” said Rachael Shay, special events supervisor for the city. “The many miles of bike-friendly transportation systems in our community and now a great campaign like Walk + Bike Carlsbad make it easy to take in Carlsbad from a different perspective.”

On May 16, 2015 the City of Carlsbad will turn Leo Carillo’s historic ranch into the Wild West Fest.
Wild West Fest is a free event and activity cards can be purchased for $6 for activities like pony and mechanical bull rides, souvenir photos with authentically dressed cowboys and cowgirls, and western themed crafts. . . Among the event highlights is the salsa contest, which is judged by Chili’s Encinitas, and features prizes for salsa taste as well as table presentation in the following categories: best overall, people’s choice, best presentation, funniest presentation, best fruit salsa, hottest salsa and originality.

Steven R. Sarkozy, the Carlsbad, California city manager who has been on the job since March 11, 2014, will no longer be with the City as of April 24, 2015.
Speaking for the City Council, Mayor Matt Hall said, “Steve is one of the top city managers in the nation, with vast experience and a stellar track record. Sometimes you can have all the right pieces, and just not the right fit. We are grateful for Steve’s efforts and wish him the best.”
In other words, don’t blame the Mayor and the City Council for hiring the wrong guy. He’s got a great resume. How could they know? Not surprisingly, this is the same way Mr. Sarkozy left his last job in Bellevue, Washington. So, it’s back to the head-hunting drawing board for the City. In the meantime, Assistant City Manager Kathy Dodson will act as interim city manager.

The City of Carlsbad is celebrating Arbor Day, Saturday, April 25, by working with local volunteers to plant trees at Hosp Grove.
The tree-planting activities will take place from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the Hosp Grove Rotary Trailhead, located on Monroe Street between Marron Road and Wickham Way. Volunteer registration begins at 8:30 a.m., with a tree planting demonstration to follow.
In addition to the tree planting, volunteers will learn about the region’s butterflies and plant monarch pollinators in a meadow adjacent to the trailhead. This project will support statewide efforts to restore the population of the overwintering monarch butterfly.
This effort will help Carlsbad retain its status as a Tree City USA for the 11th consecutive year. The designation is given by the National Arbor Day Foundation and acknowledges the city’s ongoing commitment to tree care and urban forest sustainability.
“Arbor Day is a great opportunity to give back to the community and help the environment, while meeting new friends and neighbors,” said Kyle Lancaster, parks superintendent for the City of Carlsbad.
The Arbor Day event at Hosp Grove will feature tree maintenance displays and booths from CAL FIRE, SDG&E, Davey Tree, Davey Resource Group, Western Environmental Consultants, Nissho of California and West Coast Arborists.
Tools will be provided for all volunteers. Volunteers should wear work gloves, a hat, sunscreen and closed toe shoes. It is requested that volunteers bring additional shovels, if possible. Children age 16 and younger must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
