Stolen Bikes Recovered In Downtown Carlsbad

Police LightsThose who drove down the 3600 block of Harding St on May 1, 2015 may have seen four Carlsbad Police cars and several trucks removing what seemed like bicycle after bicycle from a home on the East side of the street. Turns out all those bike where stolen and they have now been recovered.

During the searches, officers recovered what appears to be approximately 35 stolen bicycles and other miscellaneous bicycle parts. . . The Police Department is attempting to return the bicycles to their owners. The bicycles may have been stolen from Carlsbad and the surrounding area. . .Community members that have recently had their bicycles stolen are asked to contact the Police Department at 760 931-2142 or judy.thomas@carlsbadca.gov to identify and recover their bicycle.

During another search yesterday (May 5, 2015) five men were arrested including former professional surfer Che Stang.

During the search on May 5 in downtown Carlsbad, five adults were arrested for miscellaneous drug charges. Those arrested were 31-year-old Che Stang for being in possession of a controlled substance and being in possession of drug paraphernalia,and 32-year-old Brian Gutierrez, 30-year-old Steven Gutierrez, 35-year-old Keelan Stocks and 35-year-old Joshua Brandt for being under the influence of a controlled substance. The five were booked into the Vista Detention Facility.

CARLSBAD, Calif. – On May 1 and May 5, as part of an ongoing investigation into bicycles thefts, the City of Carlsbad Police Department conducted searches of two residences in downtown Carlsbad. During the searches, officers recovered what appears to be approximately 35 stolen bicycles and other miscellaneous bicycle parts.

The Police Department is attempting to return the bicycles to their owners. The bicycles may have been stolen from Carlsbad and the surrounding area.

Community members that have recently had their bicycles stolen are asked to contact the Police Department at 760 931-2142 or judy.thomas@carlsbadca.gov to identify and recover their bicycle.

During the past couple of months the City of Carlsbad experienced a significant increase in the number of bicycles being reported stolen. The thefts prompted a special and ongoing investigation that resulted in the recovery of the bicycles.

The Police Department would like to remind community members to take photos of sporting equipment like bicycles and record the serial number. Also, bicycles can be registered on Saturday mornings between 7:30 and 8:30 a.m., at local fire stations. When not in use, store bicycles inside a closed garage or other area of a house. When out-and-about, always lock-up a bicycle.
