Detroit News Reporter: No Carlsbad Charges

by The Editors on June 28, 2007

Bilde-3-TmTwo weeks ago we mentioned a story about Detriot’s Channel 7 TV reporter Steve Wilson and a little run-in he had with Carlsbad Police over his alleged impersonation of Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick to staff at the La Costa Resort and Spa. Now, according to Paul Levikow, a spokesman for the San Diego district attorney’s office, there isn’t enough evidence.

We decided we could not prove the case beyond a reasonable doubt or that Steve Wilson was the person who was on the phone,” said Paul Levikow.

Wilson of course says the whole thing was designed by the Mayor to discredit his investigation.

As I said from the start, this was nothing but a desperate stunt by the mayor to try to smear and sidetrack me and to chill others who are looking into his activities,” Wilson said in his statement. “If he wants to crusade against crime, there are better places to start than going after reporters for revealing truths he’d prefer to hide.”
