A while ago we mentioned the ridiculous lengths to which Westfield (the Australia-based owners Carlsbadistan’s Plaza Camino Real) would go to stop the construction of a competitor’s mall in Oceanside.
Now, they’ve gone even farther. Westfield is suing the City of Oceanside (22-pages long) claiming that the City Council did not properly review the environmental impacts of developer Thomas Enterprises‘ planned Pavillion mall on Highway 76, according to a story in the North County Times.
[Westfield] says its tenants, patrons and employees could be affected if the Pavilion alters air quality, noise or traffic. . . . The lawsuit claims that Oceanside made numerous errors in its analysis of the project, such as underestimating its possibly harmful effects on traffic, air quality, noise, water quality and air traffic. The city also should have required the developer to build a multimillion-dollar extension of Pala Road, from Foussat Road to Los Arbolitos Boulevard, the lawsuit states.
Isn’t it nice that Westfield is so interested in the environmental health of their shoppers and not at all interested in upgrading their own mall to attract quality retailers?

Having to go to Westfield Plaza Camino Real recently during the holidays just brought home the fact that that mall SUCKS and it is going even more downhill every day! For the owners of this mall to expect us to just put up and shut up with a junk mall, and not have any alternatives, well they are full of it and I hope a judge throws out their lawsuit!
Look at it this way. If the Oceanside mall opens and steals customers from Plaza Camino Real, then we risk having a dead mall in Carlsbad and that’s not good for anyone, especially the surrounding community.
If you do a little research, you’ll se Westfield has renovated its mall at Plaza Bonita and has plans to do the same at UCT and MIssion Valley. But if PCR suffers as a result of the Oceanside mall, Welstfield may not be able to justify there.
The best outcome is that the Oceanside mall go away.
Oceanside city planning does a Great Job at not throughly doing the correct findings or analysis.
Oceanside city hides behind eronous findings. Just enough to fit the permit with zones, codes, and state laws.
I am a citizen of oceanside and I am happy wesfield filed the lawsuite. perhaphs city departments of oceanside will finally do the the work and analysis that should be done.
They lie to the citizens and in turn get what they want forget about the constituants.
Oceanside planning does what ever the council majority tells them to do.
Which planning continous to lie on reports that are safegaurds for the citizens.
I am super happy westfield is filed a lawsuit. I am also a citizen of oceanside.
i hope they make a new mall in oceanise they need it , itll help get more jobs and at least its not a old broken down place like the plaza camino real mall. why drive all the way to carlsbad to go shopping if you can stay in your own city to shop. the carlsbad mall (plaza camino real) has way to many cars go there during the holidays. it took me forever to get out of the parking lot and it builds traffic on the 78 because everyone wants to leave at the same time. i guess people who owns the westfeild mall doesnt care about people getting jobs, they only care about themselve. if they are a great company they shouldnt be scared of a mall thats not even close to them. you think mc donald like having jack in the box next to them, i dont think so but this is the land of the free and if that mall gets build, itll lower the traffic on the 78 and help the city from being broke.
