Approved Breakfast: Don’s Country Kitchen

As much as we hate the idea of blowing out our favorite local breakfast spot, we would be remiss is we didn’t mention the cleanest, smoothest, warmest spot for morning meals in Carlsbad: Don’s Country Kitchen located at 2885 Roosevelt St. in The Village.

The first thing to know is that there is no Don. So don’t ask for him. Up until six and a half years ago there was a Bob, but then Bob and his wife sold the restaurant to Roberto Sanchez. And Roberto did the right thing: he left the menu untouched and kept rolling with the same great tasting food. Click the link for rest of the story.

Caloml1For a light breakfast we recommend the Marisa Scramble: two eggs scrambled in with freshly melted cheddar cheese (added at the last minute so it’s not fried in with the eggs) and two of Don’s famous biscuits. For a little more we like the California Omelette (right) with Swiss and American cheese, green chilies, onions, and Mushrooms with homefries (ask for onions and bell peppers). Then again, Don’s perfect pancakes are hard to pass up.

Don’s is a great all-amaerican breakfast without the greasy spoon. The servings are appropriately sized (not massive) and all the ingredients are clean and fresh. That’s why Don’s Country Kitchen is Carlsbadistan Editor Approved.

Paula and a arm-load of perfect pancakes. . . or is it the other way around?

[Additional Note: Arrive early, especially on the weekends because the place is small and popular and if you’re late you will wait in line. . . for a while]

[Additional Additional Note: If you’re more in the mood for a morning burger, check out Roberto’s other restaurant The Village Grill 2833 State St. near the corner of Grand.]

Oh no! There was a Don. I can’t believe he’s been forgotten!
Don was a wonderful kind man who was a dear friend of ours for many years.

Don was Don’s Country Kitchen. He made that resturant what it is!! I can’t believe he’s been forgetten – how unbelievably sad!!
