Carlsbad Libraries Out of COVID Rapid Tests

Before we even knew that Carlsbad’s Libraries were helping the County of San Diego distribute COVID rapid tests (The library got .01 kits per City of Carlsbad resident) we’re getting word that the Libraries of Carlsbad are already out of the kits. No real surprise there.

Here are all the details from the City of Carlsbad:

Carlsbad libraries out of COVID-19 test kits

Carlsbad libraries have given out their full supply of free COVID-19 rapid test kits provided through a partnership with San Diego County. The county provided 1,500 rapid test kits to Carlsbad libraries Monday, Dec. 27, as part of a program that distributed kits to libraries throughout the San Diego region.

When and how to get tested

The California Department of Public Health issued updated testing guidance Dec. 17. It recommends testing in the following circumstances:

If you have symptoms
Vaccinated or not, get tested immediately if you’re feeling any COVID-19 symptoms.

If you were exposed
Vaccinated people should get tested within 5-7 days of exposure.
Unvaccinated people should test immediately, and again 5-7 days after.

If you go to a high-risk event
Unvaccinated people should test before and 3-5 days after.
For mega-events of more than 1,000 people, all attendees should test within 1 day (antigen test) or 2 days (PCR test) and bring proof of negative results. Children under 2 are exempt from testing.

If you travel
Unvaccinated people should test 1-3 days before travel, and 3-5 days after.
Vaccinated or not, anyone entering or re-entering California should test 3-5 days after arrival.

Yes, it’s rather comical that we are here on the edge of 2022 in the leading country in the world and no one can figure out how to make COVID testing both FREE and EASY. Because, 1,500 kits for the City is a joke. And trying to get tested through one of the County of San Diego FREE sites is a cluster of bureaucracy that we’ve so far been unable to plow through. 

If you really need to get a test for your kids (and they attend a Carlsbad Unified School district school) you can schedule a test by clicking here. For everyone else, check in with Walgreen’s. They offer free drive through testing if you make an appointment.

Playing Poker, You Know, For the Kids

The La Costa 35 Athletic Club, a local nonprofit organization, hosted its 10th Annual Texas Hold ‘Em Poker Tournament on November 13, benefiting the Boys & Girls Clubs of Carlsbad.

Begun in 2011 as a way to give back to the community, the first poker tournament was held at the then under construction Bressi Ranch Boys & Girls Clubhouse. Since its inception, the event has nearly tripled in attendance and raised nearly $400,000. . . “There were 15 poker tables and close to 150 players,” said Tournament Director Rob Holzman. “In the end, it’s the kids who win. Over $41,000 in net proceeds was raised for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Carlsbad!”

Museum of Making Music To Reopen

After several years of planning and a complete remodel of the Museum of Making Music’s physical space, guests are invited to celebrate the museum’s grand reopening to the public on JUNE 15!

The Museum of Making Music is an inviting and engaging place for families and individuals alike. It’s a destination. A place of inquiry. A place of discovery. A place where the creative relationship between people, musical instruments, and music is explored. And a place where your imagination takes flight.

On June 15, 2021 normal hours of operations will resume. The Museum will be open Tuesday through Sunday from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM, but will be closed on Mondays and major national holidays. Lego Movie World Opens May 27, 2021

Legoland California is happy to announce the opening of the park’s newest attractions, The Lego Movie World on May 27, 2021.

The new land fully immerses guests into THE LEGO MOVIE universe and features six interactive attractions for all to enjoy. The flagship ride, Emmet’s Flying Adventure, allows guests to hop aboard Emmet’s triple decker flying couch for a thrill-seeking race against his friends. Carlsbad’s Favorite Bike Boutique Moves

Velo Hangar, Carlsbad’s favorite bespoke bicycle boutique (which was located in a shipping container behind the Village Rock Shop at the corner of State and Beech Streets), is leaving the Village of Carlsbad for a new “temporary” workshop in the Palomar Forum Business Park off Lionshead, according to owner Gordon Yeager. Here’s the story from the man himself:

On Monday April 5th, I’ll be opening my new Workshop space in the Palomar Forum Business Park. Like all my spots have been, it’s off the beaten path… The Entrance & Parking is around back. If you find the “Lucidity” Sprinter you’re in the right place. I also will have new hours. Shop will be open Monday thru Friday 11ish to 6ish. . . This is my stepping stone. It’s a great opportunity that my friends from Lucidity Biz Development offered to me until my dream spot is found. Marklyn Retzer Trio Live At Lola’s

Local musician Marklyn Retzer is bringing his trio to Lola’s 7UP Market and Deli on Saturday, April 3, 2021 at noon for a two-hour live set of acoustic guitar based groove rock. The show will be outside on the steps of the museum across from the store. There is plenty of room to sit outside and spread out, and even some picnic tables and chairs available. Bring a lawn chair and make it easier to get your own space.

Lola’s has legendary burritos and tacos. My kids started eating burritos there before they could even look over the counter. I’m stoked to be bringing music to support them and I’m looking forward to getting the songs out in the air.

Legoland To Officially Reopen April 15

The Technics Rollercoaster at Legoland was rolling the tracks today with no one on board as Legoland California workers begin putting things in order for an April 1, 2021 preview reopening.

Park Preview Days offers access to select rides including Driving School, LEGO® TECHNIC™ Coaster, Fairy Tale Brook and Coastersaurus. Kids and families can also enjoy socially distant character meet and greets, live entertainment, a wide variety of food options and Miniland U.S.A.

The Resort officially reopens April 15, offering access to SEA LIFE® aquarium and LEGO® CHIMA™ Water Park. Guests will once again be immersed into the creative world of LEGO® and some of the Park’s more than 60 rides, shows and attractions.

Carlsbad Boys & Girls Clubs Get New CEO

Boys & Girls Clubs of Carlsbad is delighted to announce the appointment of Evan Perkins as its new CEO effective immediately.

Evan was hired in 2012 as a Youth Development Professional. He has held various roles in his eight years of service including Program Director, Clubhouse Director, and most recently Director of Operations. He is taking over from Brad Holland, who led the nonprofit with distinction for ten years.

“Evan is a strong, team-focused leader and is passionate about providing safe and meaningful programs for the youth of our community,” Board President Sharone Story said “He has been instrumental in leading and managing the daily operations of our clubs while navigating multiple COVID-19 impacts. We are thrilled to promote Evan to the CEO role.”
