As we predicted, the planned three month renovation of Carlsbad’s Alga Norte Pool complex has been extended three more weeks to the first week of March 2025 rather than the planned second week of February, according to an update from the City of Carlsbad.
Work started in November, with crews draining the pool and removing the old plaster that lined the walls. During that process, the city identified additional pool repairs that need to be addressed to ensure the Alga Norte Aquatic Center will continue to serve the community for years to come. The city is taking the opportunity to complete that work now, and the aquatic center is scheduled to reopen the first week of March.
Will be interesting to see if they can stick to the deadline without discovering more that needs to be fixed. Can you tell we use the pool a lot? You’re right we do. One downside, as soon as Alga Norte reopens the Monroe Pool next to Carlsbad High will close for 18 months for their total remodel. Yes, that one and a half YEARS. Upgrades.
The City of Carlsbad’s Aloha Plunge will take place this year on Saturday, June 24, 2017 at Alga Norte Aquatic Center. Enjoy fun, island themed pool games and activities and as the sun goes down, finish the night off with a special movie, on the giant outdoor movie screen.

The solar panels placed at the Alga Norte Park will power most of the park’s electrical needs rolling forward while at the same time providing shade in the park’s hot parking lots.
The 720 solar panels, which cover two rows of Alga Norte’s parking lot and provide shade for park visitors, are expected to generate about 360,000 kilowatt-hours of energy a year, which is enough to power about 55 average San Diego homes. It also will cut carbon dioxide output by approximately 6,838 tons over a 25-year period, which is the equivalent of cutting the emissions of automobiles driving 15 million miles. . . “This system will give us the ability to watch in real time our energy consumption compared to our production,” said City of Carlsbad Civic Projects Manager Patrick McGarry. “That will give us an opportunity to see how much energy the panels are producing and when we’re spiking electric power, allowing us to make decisions to reduce consumption.”
According to the City the panels, which cost $720,000, will pay for themselves in 11 years and begin creating a $66,000 a year savings in year 12. For the official word from the City of Carlsbad, please follow the jump. [click to continue…]
