{"id":1687,"date":"2007-12-10T09:34:41","date_gmt":"2007-12-10T16:34:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.carlsbadistan.com\/?p=1687"},"modified":"2007-12-10T11:35:00","modified_gmt":"2007-12-10T18:35:00","slug":"so-what-about-the-encina-power-station","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.carlsbadistan.com\/?p=1687","title":{"rendered":"So What About The Encina Power Station?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <strong>City of Carlsbad<\/strong>, the organization that seems to love the idea of a desalination plant in the lagoon, is now asking <em>Carlsbadistan<\/em> residents if they like having the <strong>Encina Power Station<\/strong> there at all, according to a <strong>Barbara Henry<\/strong> story in the <strong><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nctimes.com\/articles\/2007\/12\/10\/news\/coastal\/1_22_1412_9_07.txt\" target=\"_blank\">North County Times<\/a><\/em><\/strong>. They&#8217;ll ask the question in a mailer that is going out this week.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;If you didn&#8217;t have (the existing power station) there today, would you put one there or would you put it elsewhere?&#8221; said <strong>Joe Garuba<\/strong>, who is managing the city&#8217;s involvement in the proposal. &#8220;We don&#8217;t have the answer to that question, but we think it&#8217;s an important question to raise.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Personally, we love the iconic nature of the power station&#8217;s 400-foot-tall smoke stack. It&#8217;s like mythical, benevolent guardian standing watch over <em>Carlsbadistan<\/em> and reminding everyone where they are, or how far they are from home. Unfortunately, <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nrgenergy.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">NRG Energy<\/a><\/strong> the station&#8217;s owner, has plans to remove the station and the stack and put in a new 520-megawatt plant that would be &#8220;not very noticeable.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>What do you think?
