\"Musicfestival<\/a>The Fifth Annual Carlsbad Music Festival <\/a><\/strong>kicks off tonight in. . . well, in Los Angeles with Calder Quartet<\/strong>, Red Fish Blue Fish<\/strong>, and Build<\/strong>. Weird, huh?<\/p>\n

And the third concert at The Loft<\/strong> on the campus of UCSD September 25, 2008 is only open to UCSD students. Seems like organizers really should call this the 71% Carlsbad Music Festival.<\/p>\n

For those who aren’t interested in making the trek to LA or currently students at UCSD the festival actually begins in Carlsbad on Monday September 22, 2008 at the New Village Arts Theatre<\/a><\/strong> with Build<\/strong>, Tristan Perich<\/strong>, and Favian Svensson<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The musicians of the Carlsbad Music Festival will perform a split set of music by composers-in-residence, Tristan Perich and Fabian Svensson. Build, led by composer\/violinist Matt McBane, performs a full set of original music featuring music from their recent release self-titled debut album. This marks festival’s first collaboration with New Village Arts Theatre in their Carlsbad Village black box theater. Seating is limited.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Calder Quartet and Build
\nSatellite Concert @ UCSD’s The Loft, La Jolla, California 92093<\/p>\n

(note: This concert is open to UCSD students only)<\/p>\n

The Calder Quartet and Build perform music by young composers including Tristan Perich, Christine Southworth and Matt McBane. This is the first performance ever in this new venue and is part of opening night celebrations that are open only to UCSD students.
\nThis is part of an ongoing relationship with ArtPower! at UCSD that also includes the co-commission of Fabian Svensson’s new piece for the Calder Quartet. Detailed program TBA.<\/p>\n

The Calder Quartet premiere a new work by the winner of the 2008 Carlsbad Music Festival Composers Competition, Fabian Svensson of Sweden. Svensson was chosen for this commission amongst 100 highly qualified applicants from around the world. Also on the program is California composer, Terry Riley’s Mythic Bird Waltz, and Fred Frith’s Lelekovice<\/p>\n

The ensemble Partch gives a performance\/demonstration of the iconoclastic, long-time Leucadia resident Harry Partch’s otherworldy music and instruments. Program to feature the Harry Partch talks with special guests closely associated with Partch and performances of the following compositions: San Francisco, Li Po Lyrics, Three Intrusions, The Letter, Come Away, Death, Barstow: Eight Hitch-hikers Inscriptions (selections).<\/p>\n

Red Fish Blue Fish is the resident percussion ensemble at UCSD led by Steve Schick. Program to include: Marimba Phase Steve Reich, Third Construction John Cage, …having never written a note for percussion… James Tenney, dust into dust John Luther Adams, unchained melody David Lang, Popol Vuh by Jeff Treviño with video by Ross Karre, and kein thema Marianthi Papalexandri-alexandri.<\/p>\n

Partch is a unique ensemble that specializes in the music & instruments of the iconoclastic American Maverick composer Harry Partch who, between 1930 and 1972, created one of the most amazing bodies of sensually alluring and emotionally powerful music of the 20th century. Partch also specializes in the music of California experimental composer Lou Harisson, performing under the name Just Strings.
