{"id":5102,"date":"2009-04-08T14:13:25","date_gmt":"2009-04-08T21:13:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.carlsbadistan.com\/?p=5102"},"modified":"2009-04-08T21:06:36","modified_gmt":"2009-04-09T04:06:36","slug":"poseidon-trips-up-on-fish-killing-numbers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.carlsbadistan.com\/?p=5102","title":{"rendered":"Poseidon Trips Up On Fish Killing Numbers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It recently came to light that the number of fish <strong>Poseidon Resources<\/strong>&#8216; proposed <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.carlsbadistan.com\/index.php?s=desalination+plant\" target=\"_blank\">desalination plant<\/a><\/strong> will kill is actually four to seven times higher than it originally estimated thanks to a math error in their calculations discovered by the <strong>San Diego Regional Water Quality Control Board<\/strong> last year, according to a story in the <strong><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www3.signonsandiego.com\/stories\/2009\/apr\/08\/1m8desal225440-error-could-delay-water-facility\/?zIndex=79119\" target=\"_blank\">San Diego Union-Tribune<\/a><\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>But in poring over Poseidon&#8217;s study on the number of fish its plant would kill, the board&#8217;s staff discovered a math error last year that significantly underestimated the number. . . .When challenged, Poseidon admitted the mistake but said it shouldn&#8217;t affect its proposal to create 55.4 acres of new wetlands to compensate for the fish killed. . . \u201cWe believe the . . . impacts for the desalination project are de minimis (insignificant), and the impacts can be offset by the 55.4 acres,\u201d said <strong>Scott Maloni<\/strong>, Poseidon&#8217;s spokesman.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>But, of course, that statement makes no sense at all. More damage requires more restoration.
