The exhibition of new encaustic paintings and sculpture by the artist explores a contemporary view of how memory shapes the human experience. The exhibition opens with a reception on January 28 from 5:30 to 8:30 pm.

“In my recent work, I’m interested in how memory shapes our view of ourselves and our relationship to others. With color and formal elements, I create a visual language from my own memories and experiences,” Newbry says. “They are a study in contrasts, between thoughts that are remembered or forgotten, with suggestions of objects that you may know or have seen. I build up multiple layers of wax and pigment, creating smooth or rough textures, which over time tell a story of a certain time and place.”

The Ivanffy-Uhler Gallery is located at 565 Grand Avenue, in the heart of downtown Carlsbad. With encaustic, I’m able to revise the work–perhaps scrape the entire surface and build it up again. So oftentimes the initial concept changes midstream and evolves into something that is new and exciting to me. It is a process of discovery.”

THE ART OF ENCAUSTIC
Encaustic, meaning to “burn in,” practiced by Greek artists as far back as the fifth century, is heated wax and pigment applied to a surface.
The medium allows for reworking the surface of a painting creating distinct textures and forms, transparency and luminosity.

Newbry’s latest series of work depicts memories and perceptions of visual experiences, human spirit and the unconscious. Intensely personal, they invite the viewer into their own larger interior space.

“I am a process painter. I utilize the physical space around events and me I’ve experienced at a specific moment, then paint intuitively. Color is intuitive and changes throughout the process. Revision of a work contributes to its finality. Knowing when the piece is finished is the most interesting time in the work for me. When to leave the work alone, with perhaps unresolved moments, is the beauty of each artwork,” says Newbry.

ABOUT THE ARTIST
Newbry received her BFA in visual and performing arts from the University of California San Diego (UCSD) and studied with artists Allan Kaprow, Eleanor Antin and Barbara Krueger.
