Members of the Carlsbad City Council and city staff joined Rotary leaders and community members for the ceremony.

Construction will begin on Oct. 18 and will take approximately two to three months to complete. The gazebo roof will be placed atop a new supporting structure located next to Magee House and the rose gardens. Lighting and electrical access will be installed inside the gazebo by city staff. In addition, the existing shuffleboard courts will be leveled to create an area that will accommodate special events and park rentals. In May, the Hi-Noon Rotary Club donated $28,638 to the City of Carlsbad to fund a contract with an approved construction company to complete the structural elements of the relocation of the Twin Inns gazebo to Magee Park. Blair Rasmussen Construction Inc. was awarded the construction contract.

Originally located behind the historic Twin Inns building on Carlsbad Boulevard, the gazebo figured prominently in weddings and other special gatherings dating back to the mid 1970s. In 1990, the gazebo was donated to the City of Carlsbad by Neiman’s Village Faire, and moved to Rotary Park with support from the Carlsbad Evening Rotary Club. The gazebo became slated for demolition in 2007, after North County Transit District resumed control of Rotary Park from the city. At that time, the Carlsbad Hi-Noon Rotary Club informed the City Council of its desire to save the gazebo from demolition, restore its roof, and rebuild it to current standards on a city-owned site. The City Council unanimously voted to approve the relocation of the gazebo to Magee Park. As a result of the tireless work and fund raising of the Rotary clubs, the roof of the gazebo has since been carefully restored to its former glory, and will soon be relocated to a new, structurally sound home at Magee Park. City staff has worked in cooperation with the Rotarians to ensure the Twin Inns gazebo will continue to be a part of the city’s history, as well as a destination for many more celebrations to come.

For more information on Magee Park, visit www.carlsbadca.gov/parksandrec or call 760-434-2826.

Carlsbad City Council members Matt Hall, Ann Kulchin and Mark Packard (pictured, L-R) help break ground at Magee Park to mark the new location of the historic Twin Inns gazebo.
