July Kicks Off With A Bank Robbery

by The Editors on July 3, 2010

The people in dark masks, hooded sweatshirts “claimed to be armed” while robbing the Carlsbad Citi bank at 1810 Marron Rd. on Thursday, July 1, 2010, according to a story in The Coast News.

Carlsbad Police responded to the scene and located a vehicle, abandoned with the motor still running, behind the Marshall’s Store, which is located in the same shopping center. It was discovered that this vehicle had been reported as stolen from the Los Angeles area. The surrounding area was searched by a police K-9 and other officers, however the suspects were not located.

We haven’t had a bank robbery since March and it was at the same bank. In fact, the Citibank on Marron Rd has been robbed at least three times in the past three years. Seems to be a favorite with the bad guys.

Armed Man Robs Carlsbad Citibank

by The Editors on March 12, 2010

At 9:50 AM today (March 12, 2010) a Latino about 5 feet 10 inches tall and 150 to 160 pounds handed a demand note to a teller at the Citibank near the intersection of Marron Road at Jefferson St. and robbed the place, according to a story in the San Diego Union-Tribune.

Witnesses reported seeing a handgun tucked into the waistband of his jeans. . . The robber was seen getting into a dark-colored, full-sized, lifted truck with off-road tires. Police searched the area but were unable to find the vehicle.

We believe this to be the first reported bank robbery of the new year. He probably needed to buy new monster truck tires. Those things are expensive.

Half As Many Carlsbad Bank Robberies In 2008

by The Editors on January 14, 2009

According to reports from the FBI there were actually four less bank robbery incidents in Carlsbadistan in 2008 than in 2007, according to a story in the North County Times.

Carlsbad saw the most significant decrease in robberies in 2008 —- just seven heists compared to 15 the year before. . . .”Of those 15, five of them were by one bank robber, the ‘Impatient Bandit,'” said Carlsbad crime analyst Fiona Everett. “Right there, if you just eliminate that one guy, then we’re almost even, with 10 in 2007 and seven in 2008.”

Still seems like a lot to us.

Navy Federal Credit Union Robbed

by The Editors on December 30, 2008

Union Bank of California wasn’t the only Carlsbadistan bank robbery today. According to a story in the North County Times a man with a gun robbed the Navy Federal Credit Union at 1824 Marron Road.

The man armed with a handgun entered the bank about 6:15 p.m. and demanded money from a teller, the dispatcher said. Witnesses said the man ran away and they did not see a car. . . . A preliminary description of the suspect indicated only that he was a black man, about 5 feet 10 inches tall, wearing blue jeans and a black jacket, the dispatcher said.

What, is everyone trying to get this money in on their 2008 taxes or what?

by The Editors on February 8, 2008

On Thursday evening, February 7, 2008 a “white man about 25 years old and 180 pounds, with dark hair and a thin goatee” rolled his longboard skateboard into the Bank of America in the 7700 Block of El Camino Real and handed the teller a note and a bag.

The note advised the teller that the suspect had a gun, though no gun was seen, Blackburn said.. . . The teller complied with the suspect’s orders to put money in the bag; the suspect then took off north through the parking lot, the sergeant said.

101 Bandit Suspect Caught in NorCal

by The Editors on December 13, 2007

A man police suspect of being the 101 bandit who they believe is responsible for at least one Carlsbad bank robbery on November 15 and 15 others since July may have been caught near Marysville, California yesterday.

Arthur Cheney, 64, of Napa was arrested at 4:20 p.m. after a California Highway Patrol officer saw him driving on Highway 70 in a 2002 Mercedes CL 500 with a paper license plate, CHP Sgt. Scott Klocker. A car matching that description has been linked to bank robberies from Palm Desert to the Bay Area, including San Jose and Palo Alto.

Apparently, when the CHP pulled him over and searched the car they found a “sticky note” with a handwritten message: ‘Robbery – 100s and 50s only.’ Officer Klocker joked, “We call that a clue.”

Carlsbad B of A Robbed A Second Time

by The Editors on December 4, 2007

We were making jokes earlier about Christmas consumption driving a rash of Carlsbad robberies, but this isn’t funny any longer. The Bank of America branch at the corner of Roosevelt and Carlsbad Village Drive was robbed yesterday (December 3) at about 2:30 PM. This is the same bank that was robbed on July 12 by a guy who looked like Elmer Fudd.

Police said the man gave the teller a demand note and showed a handgun in his waistband. The teller then gave the robber cash before he fled on foot, police said. . . .The thief was described as a white male, about 30 years old, with brown hair and a mustache. He was also described as about 5 feet 7 inches tall, wearing a blue jacket, a polo shirt, and blue jeans, police said.

And the bank robbery tote board (counting since May 07) moves to nine. This is the second Carlsbad B of A robbery in three days.
