The 2008 Carlsbad 5000 Is On

by The Editors on April 6, 2008

Master’s Women (40 and over) were the second to go this morning on a perfect Carlsbadistan day. Racers who worried yesterday about overcast and cloudy skies had nothing to fear today other than five kilometers of asphalt.

With the pro men getting out of the start at 12:15 there is still time to see history made as American mile record holder Alan Webb, 25, starts on his Road to Beijing in the Carlsbad 5000 (click the link for the USA Today Story). He’s hoping to grab a world road record. And it looks like today might be the day.

“I wanted another go in a longer race on the road before the start of the track season,” said Webb, who ran the 1,500 meters at the Athens Games in 2004 but didn’t make it out of the first round. “I know the world record on the road was set here. I’ve heard about it over the years, and winning it is a big deal. It’s not a local 5K. It’s a pretty big deal.

And it will be an even bigger deal if Webb can shatter the record. For more photos follow the jump.

A Fast American Enters Carlsbad 5000

by The Editors on March 26, 2008

Cbad5000

As if we needed one more reason to feel lazy on the morning of April 6, 2008. The San Diego Union-Tribune tells us that:

American mile record holder Alan Webb has entered the April 6 Carlsbad 5000, according to sources at Elite Racing, which puts on the 5K road race. “He’s definitely coming,” Webb’s agent, Ray Flynn, said yesterday. . . . Webb broke Steve Scott’s nearly 25-year-old record in the mile last July in Belgium, running four laps in 3 minutes, 46.91 seconds. Scott’s record was 3:47.69.

An American runner hasn’t won the Carlsbad 5000 since 2002. And when fast Americans enter, we guess that’s big news. Run, American, run.

Kenya’s Kipchoge Chases Carlsbad 5k Record

by The Editors on April 8, 2010

Cbad5K09 1-1

While the most fun comes from actually running in the Carlsbad 5000 with the civilians, there is a deep, deep elite field in this Sunday’s 25th running of the “world’s fastest 5k.” Two-time Olympic medal winner Eliud Kipchoge of Kenya will lead the field to take down Sammy Kipketer’s 13:00 road 5k record set in Carlsbad in 2000.

“Nobody has come close to Sammy’s mark since 2001,” recalls running historian Toni Reavis, 20-year broadcaster of the race. “That record has taken on a Beamon-esque stature in the ensuing years, especially Sammy’s first miles in under 4:00!”

The elites will start at 12:15 and be finished by 12:30 so if you want to catch them, be on the course. Click here for photos from last year, here for previous Carlsbadistan coverage, or follow the jump for more information.

Steve Carrell Gets Tall At Legoland

by The Editors on April 8, 2009

400 Scarell 040809 Shuffaker Legoland.JpgWhile we were out chasing runners around Carlsbadistan at the Carlsbad 5000, The Office’s Steve Carell, his wife Nancy along with their daughter Annie and son Johnny spent the day at Legoland, according to a story on Entertainment Tonight.

. . .they enjoyed attractions such as Land of Adventure, Miniland USA, Knights’ Tournament and Dino Island.
Nancy even ran into an old high school friend at the park, proving that Miniland USA at Legoland really is a small world!

Apparently, Hollywood stars get to go tromping through Miniland like Godzilla. Next time we’re there we’re just going to go for it. You should, too.

The Carlsbad 25,000 Arrives On April 5

by The Editors on March 26, 2009

Crw-3397-Tm.Jpg

The “World’s Fastest 5k” returns to Carlsbadistan on April 5th, 2009 as our streets are again taken over by thousands of ground pounders in the Carlsbad 5000. But this year there is another twist. It’s called the All Day 25k.

“We wanted to offer a new longer-distance aspect of the race that could serve as a training option for runners preparing for a marathon or half marathon later in the season,” said Shannon Davis, Event Manager. “It will make the 5K course into a challenging 25K, thus allowing our more serious runners a chance to participate in a fast, seaside training run while still taking advantage of one of Southern California’s most exciting races.”

Limited to only 150 competitors the All Day 25K will see runners racing in five of the day’s 5k runs. No thanks. Click here for photos from last year, or follow the jump for all the details. [click to continue…]
