Old Codger Robs Carlsbad Bank

by The Editors on November 15, 2007

Bank NoteWe’re thinking of creating the Carlsbadistan Bank Robbery Tote Board, just so we can more easily keep track of all the bank robberies in our quaint little village (this is number six in six months).

Today’s perp was described as a white, 60-year-old man, 5 feet 10, about 160 pounds wearing glasses, a white shirt, and blue jeans.

The man entered the [California Bank and Trust] branch on Carlsbad Village Drive near Madison Street about 10:45 a.m. After the teller gave him the money, the robber ran away. No weapon was seen.

Though we find it hard to believe that he ran all that fast. He was 60.

Man Robs Ralphs Grocery Bank

by The Editors on September 28, 2007

Hey look, another Carlsbad bank was robbed yesterday at 3:40 PM. This time it was the Union Bank of California that is located inside the Ralphs at Avenida Encinas. The man asked for cash and:

The teller handed over the cash and the robber escaped after running south through the parking lot. He was described as black, in his mid-30s, 5 feet 11 inches tall, of medium build, with his hair in dreadlocks. He wore dark pants, a gray sweat shirt and sunglasses and carried a dark backpack.

The man walked with less than $1000 in cash. Though police “searched the area for almost an hour” with the help of the San Diego County Sheriff helicopter they did not find him. This is the fifth Carlsbad bank robbery since May.

Carlsbad Citibank Robbed With Note

by The Editors on September 18, 2007

Yesterday (September 17) at 12:50 PM the Citibank at 1810 Marron Road was robbed by a young man with a note “demanding money,” according to a story in the North County Times. Apparently, it’s that easy.

The suspect, who is believed to be in his twenties, was seen leaving the area in a white Toyota truck, police said. He was wearing sunglasses and a baseball cap. A second suspect was seen in the Toyota but police didn’t have many details about his appearance, officers said.

That “hat and glasses” disguise seems extremely popular. This is the fourth Carlsbad bank robbery we’ve linked to since May.

Another Carlsbad Bank Robbed

by The Editors on July 16, 2007

The Mission Federal Credit Union branch office on Jefferson Street was robbed Monday shortly after 9:30 AM when a six feet tall 250 pound white man who appeared to be in his late 40 or early 50s approached a teller and said, “This is a robbery.”

After the employee handed over an undisclosed amount of cash, the thief left the bank and ran off to the north, according to investigators.

This is the third Carlsbad Village bank robbery in the last two months. Must be our lovely downtown’s easy freeway access.

Navy Federal Credit Union Robbed

by The Editors on December 30, 2008

Union Bank of California wasn’t the only Carlsbadistan bank robbery today. According to a story in the North County Times a man with a gun robbed the Navy Federal Credit Union at 1824 Marron Road.

The man armed with a handgun entered the bank about 6:15 p.m. and demanded money from a teller, the dispatcher said. Witnesses said the man ran away and they did not see a car. . . . A preliminary description of the suspect indicated only that he was a black man, about 5 feet 10 inches tall, wearing blue jeans and a black jacket, the dispatcher said.

What, is everyone trying to get this money in on their 2008 taxes or what?

And, as usual, he got away.

101 Bandit Suspect Caught in NorCal

by The Editors on December 13, 2007

A man police suspect of being the 101 bandit who they believe is responsible for at least one Carlsbad bank robbery on November 15 and 15 others since July may have been caught near Marysville, California yesterday.

Arthur Cheney, 64, of Napa was arrested at 4:20 p.m. after a California Highway Patrol officer saw him driving on Highway 70 in a 2002 Mercedes CL 500 with a paper license plate, CHP Sgt. Scott Klocker. A car matching that description has been linked to bank robberies from Palm Desert to the Bay Area, including San Jose and Palo Alto.

Apparently, when the CHP pulled him over and searched the car they found a “sticky note” with a handwritten message: ‘Robbery – 100s and 50s only.’ Officer Klocker joked, “We call that a clue.”

Carlsbad B of A Robbed A Second Time

by The Editors on December 4, 2007

We were making jokes earlier about Christmas consumption driving a rash of Carlsbad robberies, but this isn’t funny any longer. The Bank of America branch at the corner of Roosevelt and Carlsbad Village Drive was robbed yesterday (December 3) at about 2:30 PM. This is the same bank that was robbed on July 12 by a guy who looked like Elmer Fudd.

Police said the man gave the teller a demand note and showed a handgun in his waistband. The teller then gave the robber cash before he fled on foot, police said. . . .The thief was described as a white male, about 30 years old, with brown hair and a mustache. He was also described as about 5 feet 7 inches tall, wearing a blue jacket, a polo shirt, and blue jeans, police said.

And the bank robbery tote board (counting since May 07) moves to nine. This is the second Carlsbad B of A robbery in three days.

On The Hunt For The 101 Bandit

by The Editors on November 28, 2007

BanditPolice are trying to track down a “white or Latino and in his late 50s, about 5 feet 8 to 5 feet 10 inches tall with a thin build and dark hair that is gray at the temples” for at least one bank robbery in Carlsbad (The Old Codger) and a string of 14 robberies around the county.

In yesterday’s robbery, the man entered the Pacific Trust Bank on Bernardo Center Drive off Interstate 15 Monday at 11:05 a.m. He did not use or simulate a weapon and made off with an undisclosed amount of money, police said.

We’re guessing once you start walking into banks and asking for money and get it, it might be kind of hard to stop. This guy doesn’t even wear a disguise. . . or is that the disguise? If you’ve seen him call police at (619) 531-2299, the FBI at (858) 5651255 or Crime Stoppers at (888) 580-TIPS.

Union Of The SWAT

by The Editors on June 14, 2007

13483136 240X180You leave the controls for a few days and all hell breaks lose. The Union Bank of California at 840 Carlsbad Village Drive was held up by an 18-year-old who claimed he was carrying explosives.

. . . shortly before 1 p.m. The man entered the bank wearing only a pair of board shorts and claimed he had an explosive device, a gelatin liquid in a canister, police said. . . The man told tellers he wanted all the money from the bank or he was going to “cause damage” to people inside, authorities said.

You’d think you might want to put on a little more of a disguise when you rob a bank. We guess not if you want to get caught. Maybe this bank robbery was just a cry for help.
