{"id":6684,"date":"2009-11-06T07:46:56","date_gmt":"2009-11-06T15:46:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.carlsbadistan.com\/?p=6684"},"modified":"2009-11-07T14:40:24","modified_gmt":"2009-11-07T22:40:24","slug":"desal-water-could-be-three-times-as-costly","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.carlsbadistan.com\/?p=6684","title":{"rendered":"Desal Water Could Be Three Times As Costly"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.carlsbadistan.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/11\/poseidon_dollars.jpg\" onclick=\"window.open('http:\/\/www.carlsbadistan.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/11\/poseidon_dollars.jpg','popup','width=585,height=187,scrollbars=no,resizable=yes,toolbar=no,directories=no,location=no,menubar=no,status=yes,left=0,top=0');return false\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.carlsbadistan.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/11\/poseidon_dollars-tm.jpg\" height=\"137\" width=\"430\" border=\"1\" hspace=\"4\" vspace=\"4\" alt=\"Poseidon Dollars\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>According to a <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/documents.foodandwaterwatch.org\/carlsbad-desal-analysis.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">report releassd <\/a><\/strong>on November 4, 2009 by the consumer advocacy group <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.foodandwaterwatch.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Food &#38; Water Watch<\/a><\/strong>, the cost of water from<strong> <\/strong><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.poseidonresources.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Poseidon&#8217;s<\/a><\/strong> proposed <em>Carlsbadistan<\/em> desalination plant could cost three times as much as the company has projected.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Poseidon claims that their Carlsbad desalination water will come at \u2018no expense to the region&#8217;s taxpayers,&#8217; yet they are counting on Metropolitan Water District ratepayers and taxpayers to underwrite the project,&#8221; said <strong>Renee Maas<\/strong>, water program organizer for Food &#38; Water Watch. &#8220;Policymakers should learn from Poseidon&#8217;s failed Tampa Bay facility and only use public funds for effective and responsible projects.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>According to <strong>James Fryer<\/strong>, the author of the new report even if things go well costs could still reach $1910 per acre-foot which is twice the $950 claimed by Poseidon.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Cost over-runs and bankruptcy marked Poseidon&#8217;s previous foray into the desalination business. The Tampa Bay plant opened over a year behind schedule, and then required immediate rehabilitation.
