Carlsbad City Library fun facts:
Library services in Carlsbad began in 1916 with a small collection in the Chase General Store. In July 1956, the Carlsbad City Council officially established an independent city library system. In 1967, the Carlsbad City Library (now called Georgina Cole Library) opened. On Sept. 25, 1999, the Carlsbad City Library on Dove Lane opened, replacing the storefront La Costa branch established in 1984.

Approximately 4,000 people attended the opening day of Carlsbad City Library on Dove Lane. So many people visited the Library in the first days after it opened – approximately 3,000 daily – that books from the children’s section were virtually all checked out.

Today, Carlsbad City Library on Dove Lane is much more than books. Its 203,420-item collection includes 12,741 DVDs and videos, 19,128 audio books and 342 CD-ROMs. Programs and services for all ages include story times, author talks, concerts, play readings, computer classes, book clubs, public access computers, the Friends of the Library Bookstore and the William D. Cannon Art Gallery. Additionally, the Library offers services 24/7 through its Web site, www.carlsbadlibrary.org.
