Carlsbad Mourns The Loss Of Harold McSherry

by The Editors on July 15, 2010

In an official press release from the City of Carlsbad Mayor Bud Lewis officially confirmed the death of City Treasurer Harold “Mac” McSherry and reminded us all of the kind of man he was:

“Mac approached his role as city treasurer very professionally, always working to make sure city funds were safe and earning the highest rate of return for our taxpayers,” said Mayor Claude A. “Bud” Lewis. “He was a man with a tremendous intellect and immense curiosity about the world and was also very generous with his time giving back to our community. He will be greatly missed by his entire City of Carlsbad family.”

Our thoughts are with everyone at the City offices but mostly with the McSherry’s family and their close friends. For the rest of the release, follow the jump.
City officials were saddened today by the news that City of Carlsbad Treasurer Harold “Mac” McSherry has passed away.

McSherry had served as the city’s treasurer since July 2006 when he was appointed by the City Council to fill the term of retired City Treasurer Jim Stanton. He was subsequently elected to a four year term in November 2006.

The city treasurer is in charge of developing an investment policy for the City Council’s approval and managing the city’s investments in line with that policy. The treasurer also works closely with the city’s Finance Department to monitor the city’s cash flow, investing available cash to maximize returns for the city.

Under city law, the City Council may either appoint someone to fill the position or have the position filled through a special election. McSherry’s term was up in November 2010. The City Council has 60 days to make the decision about how to fill the position.

The city’s Treasurer’s Office is made up of the city treasurer and an assistant to the treasurer, and works with a city investment review committee made up of representatives from the city’s Finance Department, City Manager’s and City Attorney’s offices. Until the position is filled, the functions of the city treasurer’s will be carried out by the assistant to the treasurer and members of the city’s Finance Department, working with the investment review committee.

Mac and his family were our neighbors for over 12 years in Carlsbad, he was always kind, friendly and wonderful. We are very sorry to hear about his passing.

I am Mac’s oldest sister. I am so very grateful for the love and life he was provided with in Carlsbad, a city that he loved. Imiss him terribly already-not only as abrother but also as a friend. We had many wonderful times and talks together and with his intelligence and warmth enriched my life. I hope he has forgiven me for the times when we were children that I wasn’t the nicest big sister! God bless you Mac! I know that you are enjoying Heaven!
