Vans El Ponto Loco Finals On Now

by The Editors on September 6, 2008

Yates C

Some of the world’s best up and coming surfers (Kelly Slater is there, but don’t tell him we told you) are at Carlsbadistan’s Ponto Beach right now as the Vans El Ponto Loco contest wraps up. It’s 12:50 PM, the sun is out and you still have time to get down to Ponto to check out the semi-finals and finals of the event. Or, stay in your cave and watch it all on the Internet.

Carlsbad Brings Home World Bodysurfing Title

by The Editors on August 25, 2008

Toobed3

The world’s best bodysurfers were at the Oceanside Pier over the weekend competing in the 32st Annual World Bodysurfing Championship and guess who won the women’s division? 16-year-old Krista Johnson of Carlsbadistan, according to a story in the San Diego Union-Tribune.

Yesterday’s one-to three-foot waves weren’t optimal and made it more difficult to do tricks. Competitors were judged on their ride length, wave size, style and difficulty of the maneuvers. They swam in sets of six, each getting 15 minutes of competition, with their top three rides counting.

Bodysurfing: the purist’s sport. Congrats, Krista, for yet another reminder that Carlsbad kicks all over Oside.

Ponto 555X210

South Carlsbad surf locals are going to have to give up their favorite surf spot September 3-6, 2008 as Vans presents the inaugural 2 Star WQS contest El Ponto Loco.

The 2-star WQS event will bring some of the top surfers in the world together as they compete for valuable ratings points and a spot on the ASP “Dream Tour.”

If you can’t surf you might as well watch the ASP WCT Tour hopefuls fighting for a spot in the big show.

Poop Spill Closes State Beach

by The Editors on August 10, 2008

Last night at 8:01 PM a pump (that pumps “wastewater” into the ocean) failed and the poop backed up, busting out 1,000 gallons of sewage onto Coast Highway and, according to the County of San Diego Department of Evnironmental Health about 100 gallons made it to the beach through a storm drain.

This “100-gallon-spill” was large enough to force the closure of Carlsbad State Beach from “Palomar Airport Road to the breakwater,” according to a story in the San Diego Union-Tribune. The beach will reportedly open just as soon as the water tests show that its cleaned up.

Carlsbadistan’s poop surfers rejoice.

Carlsbad Knocked Out Of US Open

by The Editors on July 27, 2008

It was pretty much game over for Carlsbad surfers in the round of 48 at the US Open of Surfing at Huntington Beach this week. Taylor Knox? Out in the round of 48. Julia De La Rosa Toro? Same thing.

And while we saw Kyla Langen destroying Cherry Street in the days before the US Open began, neither she nor Lauren Sweeney made it past the round of 48.

There is one last hope, according to the San Diego Union Tribune: Taylor Jensen is in the longboard championships and will be surfing at 2:35 PM today.

Taylor Knox Slays J-Bay Day One

by The Editors on July 10, 2008

Jbay

The Billabong Pro J-Bay 08 started today in Jefferys Bay, South Africa and Carlsbadistan’s Taylor Knox surfed away with the day’s highest score in his round 1 heat against Joel Parkinson and Nic Muscroft.

Taylor Knox went mad with a near perfect 19.70 score, Parko scored a 10 and lost, Taj pulled into two monster pipes on the one wave for a 9.93, Slater made it through easily and Fanning was in fine touch.

Tune in tonight at 11 PM PST to watch the first heats of day two.

by The Editors on July 1, 2008

Reilly

Carlsbad Surfer Brent Reiley made it to the quarter finals of Nike 6.0’s 2008 Pier Pressure in Huntington Beach June 29-30, 2008. He was edged out by Australia’s Julian Wilson who went on to win the entire event, but that still leaves the Carlsbadistan ripper in 6th place on the ASP North America Pro Junior Tour.

Congrats, Brent.

Today’s Local Schofield

by The Editors on June 30, 2008

Bre-1

Former Carlsbad High School surf team member and current top UCSD distance runners Bre Schofield got a little profile (and photo shown above) in yesterday’s Today’s Local News. The 19 year old seems to have an amazingly bright future ahead of her in track and field.

When she’s not at MiraCosta College for a summer philosophy class or online completing a geology course, Schofield spends most of her time preparing for a new challenge: the upcoming women’s cross country season. . . . “It’s not often that a college athlete gets to practice a new sport,” said the 5-foot-4, 115-pound Schofield, who blossomed as one of UCSD’s top track distance runners last season. “It’s something new not being on the track, so it’s going to be twice as exciting to see what I can do.”

Congrats, Bre. We hope training goes well and that you have time to surf every once in a while. Because nothing should get in the way of your surfing.

CHS Surf Team Second in NSSA Champs

by The Editors on June 28, 2008

Leave it to a crew of “home-school” Hawai’ian kids from Elite Element to squeak by Carlsbad High School Surf Team in the finals of the NSSA National High School Surf Championships.

Elite Element — which is a home-school program — defeated Carlsbad (Calif.) High in the final. The finals were run in 3- to 4-foot waves at Lower Trestles.

Congrats, CHS. It’s a shame we can’t all live in Hawaii and go to school only when we don’t feel like surfing.

Surfers Ride The Rails At Cold Waters

by The Editors on June 27, 2008

Railsurf

People strolling the seawall this evening saw some strange happenings in the surf just north of the Power Station. A group of guys had what looked like a snowboard box out in the waves and surfers were repeatedly trying to boardslide and 50-50 it.

We’re not exactly sure what was up, but we saw a Volcom van and a Transworld Surf truck, and from the looks of the number of cameras around it would appear that someone was filming for either a TV show or a movie.
