We mentioned this the first time on November 17, 2007 when the pending permit notice went up on the Tamarack sign. Now, it looks like it will proceed, as the Coastal Commission staff is recommending approval.
Staff is recommending approval of the project with various special conditions. . . Special conditions include the requirement for a monitoring program to document any impacts to public access, or the development of additional public trails down the coastal bluff. A further special condition has been recommended to approve the parking fees on a trial three year basis.
Obviously, we believe this is a terrible idea for several reasons, most importantly being that it is going to simply push all the people up into Carlsbadistan. When parking on the streets is free and it costs $8.00 to park at the beach, where are people going to park? That’s right: in our neighborhood. We think it is completely selfish of the California State Parks to try to raise funds by packing our streets even more than they already are.
We have contact the Carlsbad City Managers office and will report back as soon as we have any more information.
The Paddle Out Campaign is raising funds to build out the interior, including new exhibits and displays, of CSM’s soon-to-be new location at 312 Pier View Way. . . . There will be live music with Super Wave, fabulous Hawaiian-style buffet and a silent auction with many limited-edition items.
Tickets are $55 for members, $65 for non-members and are available right here.
You’d think we would have known this, however, while scanning the results from the recent ASP Roxy Pro Gold Coast surf event at Snapper Rocks in Australia we completely missed Carlsbadistan’s best female surfer because Julia Christian changed her name when she married her long-time boyfriend Magoo del la Rosa Toro.
She is now Julia de la Rosa Toro and she is surfing under the Peruvian flag. Her quarter final appearance at Snapper Rocks suggests that she’s surfing better than ever as well.
This probably explains why we haven’t seen her in the water lately.
According to a Scott Bair story in the North County Times, Carlsbad resident Matthew Wild “severely injured his spine diving into a swimming pool in May 2003, just weeks before graduating from Santa Fe Christian School.” Now thanks to an organization called Life Rolls On, Wild had the chance to get back on board.
It’s been a long time since I’ve been in the water, so that in itself was a great experience,” said Wild, who also starred on the Eagles basketball team that won a CIF San Diego Section title in 2003. “It’s completely different than the surfing I’m used to, but it was still awesome to be a part of it again.”
The film, which stars Kevin Connelly, Jesse Timm, and In Search of Captain Zero author Allan Weisbecker, includes five songs from Retzer’s album Beach Days.
Going With the Flow is premiering at two San Diego locations this week: at Sherwood Auditorium, at 700 Prospect St., in La Jolla on Tuesday February 26, 2008 and at the world famous La Paloma Theatre in Encinitas on Thursday, February 28, 2008.
Marklyn will be playing a live acoustic set before each show, so arrive early and hear some music from the film.
We said we wouldn’t keep doing this, but we’re going to. Here is video of pretty much every wave ridden in the 2007 Billabong Pro Pipeline Masters finals. It was not pretty, and Pancho Sullivan was the only American in it, but it was a contest and there were small, yet ridable, waves. Bede Durbidge of Australia surfed away in the record books with his first Pipeline win. We promise this is the last North Shore surfing clip for a while at least. If you want to watch all four days videos, click here.
Taylor Knox was eliminated today during his round two heat against Kauai’s Roy Powers. So that’s it for Taylor in this contest, and that might just be it for our 2007 Billabong Pro Pipeline Masters coverage as it looks like it’s going to be pretty flat for the remainder of the waiting period.
[Editors’ Note: Here, we even have some video from day three, but don’t tell anyone.]
Other than the fact that Taylor Knox got fourth place in his first heat, this really has nothing to do with Carlsbadistan. But we shot it, so peep it if you want. It’s day one of the 2007 Billabong Pro Pipeline Masters from the North Shore of Oahu.
The reported swell rolled in last night and had everyone amped for this morning. Unfortunately, the messed up west northwest ground swell put on a great show for wave watchers, but not much good surf for the crew in the water.
The largest crowd was a Tamarack where the rights were charging through every 30 minutes or so. Warm waters was completely junked up, but outside Taramar was breaking with some bomber crumbles coming through. We’re going to wait and see if it cleans up a little later in the day, but we’re not expecting anything.
California State Park lifeguards are planning on monster surf beginning this afternoon, according to a story on SignOnSanDiego.com. “It’s going to be very, very big,” said Alex Peabody, an aquatic safety specialist with the California State Parks public safety division. “You’re going to see some pretty amazing waves.”
Waves are expected to reach 5 to 7 feet this afternoon, then increase through tomorrow morning. By then, swells could reach 8 to 10 feet, with sets in excess of 15 feet. A high surf advisory will be in effect from 1 p.m. today through 10 p.m. Thursday.
Mother Ocean must love Wednesdays? We will keep you posted as the predicted swell of the year rolls in. Check back on Carlsbadistan.com for full photo coverage.
