Shaun White Celebrates 21 Birthday. . . In Vegas

by The Editors on September 5, 2007

Tony HawkAccording to People.com Carlsbad’s action sports hero Shaun White recently celebrated his 21st birthday in Las Vegas (of course) with 40 of his closest friends including Carlsbad skateboarding legend Tony Hawk. Apparently Shaun had. . .

. . . dinner at Las Vegas’s N9NE Steakhouse . . . feasted on everything possible, even buying out every magnum bottle of Cristal in the joint. After dinner, the group flocked to the Playboy Club, taking in a rock-and-roll set by DJ OB-one, and partying well into the morning.

Yeah, that’s the way you do it, you ride that snowboard on that ESPN. That ain’t workin’ . . .

Shaun White Wins Another One

by The Editors on August 19, 2007

After a Gold medal in the X Games Vert Skateboarding, Carlsbadistan’s extreme sports wünderkinder Shaun White rolled up to Portland, Oregon for the Vans Invitational stop of the AST Dew Tour and won his third Dew Tour event of the season.

I was just watching everyone else and, after my first run, I just focused and landed it,” said White, from Carlsbad, Calif. “I didn’t want to pull another X Games and wait to the last minute.”

Nothing surprising here. He’ll win them all.

Jake Brown: The Harder They Fall

by The Editors on August 8, 2007

Carlsbadistanian vert skater Jake Brown has had a full media schedule since falling 46 feet to flat during the X Games Big Air competition in Carson, California last week. In fact, from a media perspective nearly dying on live TV may be the best thing that ever happened to the 32-year-old Australian native. He’s been on Good Morning America, Today Show, and even Larry King.

Brown’s media requests since the fall have been virtually nonstop – MTV, Fuel TV and Australian television, to name a few. “It’s pretty wild, man,” Brown said. “I’m taking it in stride. I hope I’m doing skateboarding justice.” . . . Brown said he plans to resume skating in 2-3 weeks.

Jake, we’re just glad you’re okay.

X Games On The White Board

by The Editors on August 6, 2007

Uniontrib 20070806 Images Sp-X2-280We all know action sports super hero Shaun White is the best all around competitive board rider in the world, however, yesterday at the X Games in Carson, California he sealed the deal by becoming the first person ever to win gold in snowboarding superpipe and follow it up with a gold medal in vert by pulling it out in his final run of the ESPN created made-for-tv event. This is the third consecutive professional vert contest he has won this year (he’s apparently ruling the “Dew Tour” as well).

The judges confirmed the obvious, scoring White’s run a winning 95.75. Carlsbad’s Pierre Luc Gagnon took second (91.25). Enabling North County to monopolize the medals, Encinitas’ Mathias Ringstrom earned third (88.25).

And while he may have moved up-market to Rancho Sante Fe we will still claim him as a Carlsbadistanian, even if he is getting written up in The New York Times.

Hensley’s Flying Elephant Grand Opening

by The Editors on July 12, 2007

HensleyMost of the time we’re quite happy linking out to other media sites for coverage, however, occasionally we’re bummed when we miss covering an event in person. The Grand Opening of Hensley’s Flying Elephant Pub and Grill, at Tamarack and I-5 is one we should have attended. Luckily for us Amanda Branam and photographer Sean DuFrene of Todayslocalnews.com covered all the goodness as former Flogging Molly accordionist Matt Hensley celebrated with friends and family. It looks like the pro skateboarder is finally settling down.

“I’ve always made a living doing odd things. I made a living skateboarding and playing accordion. I still play accordion, and now I own a pub,” said Hensley, who celebrated the grand opening of Hensley’s Flying Elephant Pub and Grill yesterday in Carlsbad. “Owning this pub is probably the most legitimate thing I’ve done in my life. Or the most common thing.”

Click the link for all the details on Hensley’s Flying Elephant Pub and Grill, and the man himself.

Carlsbad’s Newest Private Skatepark

by The Editors on June 27, 2007

Earthopening100008Apparently, last night was party night at Carlsbad’s Earth Products headquarters as Chris Miller and his PE/Adio crew pulled the wrapping off their new, indoor, “you can’t skate it unless you know someone” skatepark including the new Adio bowl. But we’ll put it this way, if you’re in the lobby of Earth Products (on El Camino Real just north of Palomar Airpord Road), you’re really close to the park.

White’s Tennesse Shoe Demo

by The Editors on June 17, 2007

Shaun WtennCarlsbad’s Shaun White was in Franklin Tennessee yesterday putting on a show for the kids at the Journeys Backyard BBQ tour at CoolSprings Galleria in Williamson County. But not all the kids were happy.

Christian Bush, 10, of Joelton, was disappointed last year because skateboarder and MTV star Bam Margera, wasn’t on the program. “I didn’t like it very much last year because Bam wasn’t there,” he said.
He left unfulfilled again this year because Margera had to cancel his appearance after suffering a lacerated liver earlier in the week, event organizers said.

That didn’t stop Shaun and the rest of the Carlsbad-based Adio Footwear team from putting on a show including Shaun pulling “a couple of 720-degree spins in warm conditions.”

Shaun White #12 on ESPN’s List

by The Editors on June 13, 2007

The fans are helping ESPN.com and Sportcenter pick the top 32 athletes in the world and currently Carlsbad’s Shaun White is ranked number 12 between Dale Earnhardt Jr and Danica Patrick.

Shaun White. He doesn’t play a real sport? Well, there is more to life than football, baseball and basketball. The snowboarding/skateboarding whiz kid is a commercial success, an Olympic gold medalist and owner of the coolest nickname in sports, “The Flying Tomato.”

We thought he changed his nickname to “The Animal.” Hmmm.

White and Hawk: Jeep’s Dancing Bears

by The Editors on June 4, 2007

Campjeep

According to a press release, Carlsbad’s favorite action sports sons Shaun White and Tony Hawk will join Tim McGraw and 80s party band The B-52s:

at Camp Jeep(R) 2007, the annual “owners only” three-day mix of off-road driving and other family- friendly outdoor activities, to be held July 26-28 at the Oak Ridge Estate in Nelson County, Va., near Charlottesville.

The Camp Jeep event, which is open only to Jeep owners, will cost $295 per vehicle. Guess putting on a show for your owners is what comes along with being sponsored. Sadly, we’ll miss this one.
