Carlsbad’s Dr. Feel Good’s New Jesus Book

by The Editors on April 4, 2008

DeepakDeepak Chopra, the author, speaker, Carlsbadistanian, and founder of the Chopra Center for Wellbeing at the La Costa Resort & Spa has a new book out. This one is about something he calls the Cosmic Jesus. It is titled: The Third Jesus: The Christ We Cannot Ignore.

“I said to myself, ‘Why not write a book that takes Jesus’ teachings —- and it doesn’t matter if you’re Christian or not —- and learn from this and improve your life?'” he told The Associated Press at the Chopra Center and Spa in midtown Manhattan.

Seems nothing is more profitable these days than offering up happiness solutions by blending the East and the West into something that we all can feel good about. And no one does it better than Deepak.

Davison Goes From Fat To Fabulous

by The Editors on February 18, 2008

Carlsbadistanian Nicole Davison, 29, had gastric-bypass surgery last June. Since then she has dropped 248 pounds. At a Newport Beach meeting of 18 women who had experienced surgical weight loss, the 150 pounder says she’s having trouble getting used to being attractive.

‘I had always been the buddy. Now they say things like, ‘So-o-o, what are you doing tonight?’ After six years without going on a date, it’s an adjustment,’’ she said.

We’re sure it is. Nice work, Nicole.

Deepak Cashing In On Depression

by The Editors on January 22, 2008

Gi 0 DeepakchoprasizedApparently, business is booming at Carlsbad’s Chopra Center for Wellbeing, thanks to a growing number of Americans who “suffer from diagnosed anxiety, depression, and other mood disorders.”

But Deepak Chopra, M.D. and his partner David Simon, M.D. couldn’t be happier because they have the solution: The Perfect Health Program offered only at their Carlsbad location.

Perfect Health participants experience a week of personalized treatments that integrates the advances of modern Western medicine with the therapeutic practices of Ayurveda – the 5,000-year-old healing system of India. Each day, guests experience Ayurvedic massage treatments, cleansing therapies, and expert instruction in yoga and meditation. In addition, the Perfect Health program includes one-on-one consultations with the Centers medical staff – MDs who are also experts in the field of holistic healing.

The five-day sessions only costs $3,475 per person (not including food or lodging). If money causes depression, this is a sure way to get rid of it.

Carlsbad Last To Beach “No Smoking” Party

by The Editors on November 15, 2007

If a ban on smoking at Carlsbad beaches could raise tax revenue for the city you know the Carlsbad City Council would have been all over it years ago. But seeing as a beach smoking ban is simply a smart, well-reasoned thing to do, the Council has only recently thought about it.

“Apparently, we’re the last one to consider a smoking ban,” Councilman Mark Packard said, mentioning that the Encinitas City Council decided Tuesday to draw up such an ordinance.

According to a Barbara Henry story in the North County Times Carlsbad is that last North County city in San Diego County to take action. Bans are already in place in Del Mar, Oceanside and Solana Beach.

But not everyone is in favor of this ban. Mayor Bud Lewis thinks this “smacks of over-regulation,” and Councilwoman Julie Nygaard doesn’t see a “butt-problem” at Carlsbad beaches. Then there’s Police Chief Tom Zoll. He seems to view it as more work:

Enforcement of a smoking ban at the beach won’t be easy — it could require dispatching an officer to walk the beach, he said.

Yes, Chief Zoll, an officer may actually need to get out of his or her car and we know how dangerous that can be.

Game of Chicken Pox at Calavera Hills

by The Editors on October 15, 2007

Looks like six kids at the Calavera Hills Middle School have come down with the chicken pox and officials have warned parents that their kids may have been exposed.

“We are working closely with school officials to identify children who may have been exposed,” said Dr. Wilma Wooten, the county’s public health officer. “Parents should check with their physicians to make sure their children are inoculated against chicken pox and other preventable diseases,” she said.

It’s that itchy, scratchy, red-blotchy, high fever time of year. Hopefully, your kids have been vaccinated.

The MS Challenge Starts In Carlsbad

by The Editors on September 7, 2007

2007Sprintmscbanner-1

If you happen to notice a lot of people walking down PCH in south Carlsbad today it’s not an evacuation. It’s day one of the three day Sprint MS Challenge Walk. Starting at 6 AM this morning at the Flower Fields participants will walk 20 miles south along the coast. Day two is a walk from Del Mar to La Jolla, and day three will see the walkers ending up in downtown San Diego.

The Sprint MS Challenge Walk may be the greatest journey you will ever take. It will definitely be unlike anything you have ever experienced. It’s an event that will test your spirit as much as your strength. Carlsbad to San Diego, California

The goal of the walk is to raise $1.2 million for multiple sclerosis research. And currently they are only a couple hundred thousand short. If you’d like to donate money to sponsor a walker, click here.

Carlsbad Water Get Fluoride

by The Editors on August 15, 2007

Seems like this is something that should have happened in the 1970s, but better late that never.

Customers of the Carlsbad Municipal Water District can expect to receive postcards by the end of August notifying them that fluoride will be added to the city’s water supply starting Oct. 1. . . Dentists have long argued that the substance can help prevent tooth decay and reduce the risk of cavities. But while many health care professionals support the fluoridation movement, it has been controversial in recent years.

According to the North County Times, the city of Escondido residents fought fluoride for four years before finally losing out. Carlsbad City Councilman Mark Packard, a local dentist says that it’s about time.

Personal Trainer for Carlsbad Firefighters

by The Editors on July 13, 2007

Left Splash 2The firemen at Carlsbad’s Station 1 have decided that it’s time to bring their health and physical fitness to the forefront and start living right. That’s why they’ve been working with Carlsbad personal trainer Jennifer Ashley. Since Jennifer’s arrival things have improved vastly.

In just more than a month, one firefighter has lost 20 pounds, while another has lost 15 pounds. According to Danny Glessar, a 43-year-old fire engineer, the biggest change has been in his energy levels. “I was tired all the time. I have two small children at home, and I work at a busy firehouse where we are woken up regularly. You’re pretty exhausted by the end of the week,” said Glessar, who has lost six pounds.

According to the story in The Coast News, Ashley hopes to work with all the firemen in Carlsbad.

“It’s reaffirms to me that I’m doing the right thing with my life,” she said. “I’m changing lives and helping so many people just by sharing my education with them.”

Carlsbad Braces for Triathlon

by The Editors on July 6, 2007

We’ve already mentioned that Tamarack Beach (all the way north to Pine Street) will be closed Sunday July 8 due to the Carlsbad Triathlon, but now the North County Times presents a more level, fact-filled version of the story. It even features quotes from people involved.

Amateur competitors from as far away as Hawaii, New York and Mexico City are registered to participate in the event, which includes a 1-kilometer ocean swim, a 25k bike race and a 5k footrace along the Carlsbad coastline, said Carlsbad recreation supervisor Rachel Shay. “Carlsbad is a city geared to (a triathlon) with the ocean and the scenic seawall,” Shay said, “And with the sprint nature of this race, anyone can compete and succeed.”

Now that’s what we call reporting. Click the link for all the details.
