Yesterday, March 9, 2009, Carlsbad Unified School District officials joined together with McCarthy Building Companies to official celebrate the beginning of Carlsbad High School’s $86 million renovation, according to a story in the San Diego Union-Tribune.

The project, funded by Proposition P, a $198 million bond measure that district voters approved in 2006, will feature a new 3,900-seat stadium and 11 new buildings – including space for the performing arts, vocational education and a new food service facility. . . Army And Navy Academy Gunning For Upgrades

by The Editors on January 4, 2009

AnaCarlsbadistan’s 99-year-old Army and Navy Academy is hoping to make some major renovations if they can get their plans approved by the city of Carlsbad, according to a Barbara Henry story in the North County Times.

Officials with the private military high school want to tear down a number of aging buildings, give some other structures a face lift and add new dormitories, classrooms and sports facilities. Also planned is a pedestrian bridge across Carlsbad Boulevard, linking the main campus buildings with the sports fields.

Hurry up and get this approved. We’re tired of nearly getting hit every time we try to cross Coast Highway in front of the ANA campus.

The $718,169 CHS Dirt Movement

by The Editors on November 10, 2008

The City of Carlsbad is expected to approve a $718,169 bid by McCarthy Building Companies Wednesday night to move the arsenic-laced dirt from the Carlsbad High School football field, according to a story in the North County Times.

Clean-up work is expected to start Nov. 24 and take less than a week. Once the soil is removed, work is expected to start on a new stadium on the campus. . . . District officials expect to be done with the renovation work in 2011.

And to think: our parents always said there were better things to do than spend our days digging in the dirt. If we’d known we could make three quarters of a million dollars a week hauling dirt we never would have wasted time learning to type.

Carlsbad Students Can Drive 55

by The Editors on July 8, 2008

Slow
Bijan Plikat and Marianna Silva keeping it slow.

While most high school students are spending the summer speeding around in cars from one event to another, a group of Carlsbad High Schools students have decided to drive 55 in the right hand land and then to wave their hands out the window to encourage other drivers to slow down as well, according to a story in Today’s Local News.

After learning about how their counterparts in Europe deal with high fuel costs, many of the roughly 150 juniors and seniors in the foreign language classes have started a campaign to “slow down and save gas. . . “It’s taking responsibility for my own actions,” said Naomi Tirronen, who graduated last month. “I do need to save gas and money. If everyone didn’t buy gas as often, maybe demand would be lower and prices wouldn’t go up so high.”

Good luck, kids. Driving 55 mph on SoCal freeways probably makes you more of a hazard, especially if you’re distracting people with all that hand waving. But it’s a nice thought.

CHS Field: Arsenic And Lancers

by The Editors on July 4, 2008

The football field at Carlsbad High School was condemned yesterday after soil tests showed elevated levels of arsenic six inches below the field, according to a story in the San Diego Union-Tribune.

The routine testing was part of the school’s planned expansion, which was to include the demolition of the football field and track at the end of this year’s football season. With the results of last week’s tests, however, orange fencing has been assembled around the field and the Lancers will be playing on a new surface earlier than they imagined.

Maybe that’s why other teams have such a hard time winning at Swede Krcmar Field.

CHS Surf Team Second in NSSA Champs

by The Editors on June 28, 2008

Leave it to a crew of “home-school” Hawai’ian kids from Elite Element to squeak by Carlsbad High School Surf Team in the finals of the NSSA National High School Surf Championships.

Elite Element — which is a home-school program — defeated Carlsbad (Calif.) High in the final. The finals were run in 3- to 4-foot waves at Lower Trestles.

Congrats, CHS. It’s a shame we can’t all live in Hawaii and go to school only when we don’t feel like surfing.

CUSD Budget Cuts Not So Deep

by The Editors on June 27, 2008

One month ago administrators of the Carlsbad Unified School District thought they would have to trim $5.6 million from the 2008-2009 budget, according to a story in the San Diego Union-Tribune. Now, thanks to being reclassified as a “basic aid” school district (because of high local property values) the district adopted a $96.6 million budget with only $2 million in cuts.

Carlsbad joins several other coastal North County districts – Del Mar, Solana Beach and Encinitas – that are designated as basic aid because property values are so high there. Only about 80 of California’s more than 1,000 public school districts are basic aid districts. . . . That means that over the next fiscal year, Carlsbad Unified is expected to have $3.1 million more to spend than it otherwise would have had as a revenue limit school district.

We don’t exactly understand all the technical details, but smaller-than-expected budget cuts on education are always a great thing.
