From the North County Times:
Autism has not stopped Carlsbad High School senior and honor roll student Ian Mortimer, 17, from accomplishing his dreams, which Saturday included building a 500-foot rail fence.
“It’s a good, challenging project,” Ian said, as he led a team of volunteers from Troop 784, the Kiwanis Club of Carlsbad and the city of Carlsbad, and family and friends helping to install the fence in “Village H,” just off Carlsbad Village Drive.
The fence was created to protect the nearby property and the endangered species of plants and animals that live on it, said Paula Chester, Ian’s mother.
Thanks, Ian.

La Costa Canyon quarterback Jose Mohler announced Monday night that he will be accepting a full scholarship to North Dakota State University, in Fargo North Dakota.
“I just hit me all of a sudden,” Mohler said. “I was sitting on the plane and I thought, ‘I can totally see myself playing there. . . . “It was quite frigid when I went there,” Mohler said. “But other than that, it was a great fit. The players were all really great, they play in a dome and the coaches said I’d have a chance to contribute pretty soon. I can’t wait to get started.”
Mohler doesn’t even begin to know what cold is. Seriously.

According to a story in the North County Times, a group shot of eight former La Costa Canyon boys water polo team members (as well as players from other high schools in Southern California) have appeared on several “Internet pornography” sites lately and officials are trying to find out how they got there.
The photos caught widespread attention after the Orange County Register reported Saturday that water polo players from least 11 Orange County high schools as well as schools in Los Angeles and San Diego counties appeared on five Web pornography sites geared for gay viewers. . . . La Costa Canyon athletic director John Labeta said the photo of the Mavericks players posing poolside in their swimsuits appears to be five to seven years old. None of the players still attends the school, he said.
Oh, the horrors. . .

The La Costa Canyon Mavericks fashion modeling team (we made that last part up, sorry) will be going catwalk-to-catwalk against La Jolla, Lincoln, and Point Loma high schools in Hurley clothing’s Walk the Walk fashion competition on January 25, 2008 at the House of Blues at 1055 5th Ave. San Diego, CA.
Hurley’s “Walk The Walk” Fashion Show is dedicated to inspiring creativity and confidence among its diverse audience. The competition flips the traditional fashion show model, giving participants total artistic control backstage to interpret Hurley fashion, while stylists and designers look on from the crowd. . . . The participants are responsible for styling the outfits, creating an overall theme, providing models, and overseeing hair, makeup, accessories, and shoes. They are also responsible for managing production, music selection and event promotion.
Apparently, Hurley designers need inspiration, and high school’s oft overlook fashionaletes need their chance to compete. The winning school will take home a $5000 art and music program donation from Hurley. As Tim Gunn would say, “Make it work, Mavericks.”

Tonight, according to the North County Times, the “Trustees of Carlsbad Unified School District are expected to approve three high school design and construction contracts totaling more than $5 million.”
The contracts include: $4.28 million in design fees to the architectural firm Perkins + Will; $150,000 in preliminary construction planning to McCarthy Building Companies; $322,240 in preliminary construction planning to Douglas E. Barnhart, Inc.
This spending is all part of the the approved Proposition P that “authorized the district to sell $198 million in school construction bonds.” It’s nice to see money being spent on education, so go crazy with it.

Rachel Morris, the sophomore golf champ from Carlsbad High School, rounded up her second San Diego Sectional girls individual title with a one under par 71 November 7, 2007 at Warner Springs Ranch.
“I had already won, so I knew I could do it again,” Morris said. “That gave me confidence. There was also a little bit of pressure, but I just focused on playing my own game.” . . . Morris opened with two of her four birdies on the first three holes in the shotgun start. . . . “I’m really excited,” Morris said. “I played well and shot a good score.”

Well, if the Carlsbad Lancers football team had to lose a game then it might as well have been to the Oceanside Pirates. Before tonight the Lancers hadn’t lost since September 2005 and all of Carlsbadistan can all take cold comfort in knowing that last night’s game in Oceanside was never even close.
The Pirate offense marched up and down the field at will, while Carlsbad’s offense couldn’t score a point and rarely made it’s first downs. The Lancers’ only touchdown was scored by an intercepting in the first half. Ouch. But streaks of any kind tend to play with people’s heads, so it’s probably good that this one is over and the Lancers can get back to basics. . . playing the quality football that we all know they are capable of.

We said it will be big news when the Carlsbad Lancer football team finally loses a game. And we hope there is no big news under this weekend’s friday night lights. Tonight the Lancer football team will be playing the Oside Pirates in Oceanside at 7 PM. Not following high school football at all we’d have to guess that this will be a pretty big game, especially when you consider that the Lancers have a 25 game winning streak rolling.
We’d go to the game ourselves if it weren’t for our long standing rule about not being in Oceanside after the sun goes down. Go Lancers. . . !

We’re not big football fans, however, it appears that the Carlsbad High School football team is on to some kind of winning streak. In fact, counting last night’s 8-7 scramble over La Costa Canyon they’ve won the last 25 games and are currently ranked number one in the county. We guess that means the really big news will come when they finally lose one. We’ll let you know if (and when) that happens.

Carlsbad-based real estate developer Russell “Rusty” Grosse, who was “instrumental in creating the YMCA Aquatic Park in Carlsbad and who has hosted (with his wife Bebe) the annual Magical Evening fundraiser for the Women’s Resource Center for 27 years is being inducted into the Oceanside High School Hall of Fame this year at a ceremony on October 20, 2007.
. . . a 1953 graduate and an inductee in business, [Grosse] practiced law in Oceanside before founding Foursquare Properties Inc., a company that has developed large housing, retail, industrial and office projects throughout the western United States, including several in Oceanside.
We’re usually not big fans of developers, however, Rusty is one of the most personable, kind, generous guys in the business and Carlsbadistan should be proud. . . even if Oceanside is giving him the award.
