TGIF 2: The Dustbowl Revival

by The Editors on June 28, 2016

Carlsbad’s 2016 TGIF Concerts In The Park series has one the best lineups ever, but the hippest, brightest, raddest highlight of the summer is going down this Friday night (July 1, 2016) as The Dustbowl Revival lights up Stagecoach park with their bluegrass, hot jazz, pre-war, American roots orchestra.

Here’s how the LA Times describes the band:

A nine-piece band replete with tuba, washboard, accordion, fiddle, mandolin, trumpet and guitar joyously pumped out early 20th century standards and original tunes that would have sounded utterly at home within the hallowed confines of Preservation Hall in New Orleans’ French Quarter. “

We usually say this once a summer, but here it is: if you only go to one TGIF Concert In The Park make it The Dustbowl Revival.  You will be glad you did. Music starts at 6 PM. Remember to bring low-back chairs, snacks, and feet ready to move. Stagecoach Community Park is located at 3420 Camino de los Coches, Carlsbad, California.

Cori Schumacher Announces City Council Bid

by The Editors on March 7, 2016

She announced her intentions March 6, 2016 and wrote about it here on Facebook:

Yesterday, at a gathering of folks celebrating the monumental and historic achievement of the defeat of Measure A, I announced my intention to run for City Council this November. The possibility of pursuing a proactive role working hard for social and environmental justice and the common good in Carlsbad intimately aligns with the core of who I am and is a natural extension of the nearly 16 years I have spent as a social and environmental justice activist. I want to work for this community in the most efficacious and substantive way that I am able.

Next Measure A Result Update Tomorrow

by The Editors on February 24, 2016

carlsbad-no-signs

While the vote tally currently looks good for those hoping to defeat Carlsbad, California’s Measure A (the “no” vote is currently in the lead by 186 votes), the election is far from over. The County of San Diego Registrar of Voters says the next update to the election results will be Thursday, February 25, 2016 sometime before 5 PM.

This count will include approximately 4,100 mail ballots. The registrar is also in the process of reviewing about 3,000 “provisional” ballots, ballots that need additional verification before they can be counted. Those results are not expected until at least Friday, and possibly not until Monday, according to the registrar’s office.

In the yesterday’s election “provisional ballots” made up about 7.4 percent of the total. According to the PEW Charitable Trust, in the 2012 General Election 8.1 percent of California’s cast ballots were “provisional” so it seems like Carlsbad’s number is pretty much normal for an election in our state. It’s those late mail-in ballots that could get interesting.
