Crossings Over Into Reality

by The Editors on July 31, 2007

spts_crossings.jpgSan Diego Union Tribune writer Tod Leonard breaks down The Crossings-At-Carlsbad with all the trials and tribulations of its 18 year trudge into reality. After reading this story it’s a wonder the place is going to open at all. From dinosaurs and indian burial grounds, to plane crashes and talking golf carts, Carlsbad’s muni golf course is a compelling $64 million story.

The Crossings: Sneek Peek & Putt

by The Editors on July 28, 2007

thecrossings-tm1.jpg

While the course itself won’t open for play until August 11, the city’s $63.3 million project The Crossings-At-Carlsbad will be open for public inspection today.

During today’s events, people will be able to look out the windows of what Kulchin describes as “one of the most beautiful clubhouses I’ve ever seen.” They’ll also be able to practice their putting skills and even hike the trails that run through the project.

We don’t know which is worse: seeing the course and not being able to play it, or just skipping the event entirely. We think we’re going to wait.

City Of Carlsbad Loses In A Landslide

by The Editors on July 21, 2007

13728175 240X180Looks like a leaking Carlsbad City pipe is to blame to the tune of $11.3 million in a slow-moving landslide that destoyed eight condo unites on La Costa Avenue.

A multimillion-dollar lawsuit has been settled against the city of Carlsbad and the Carlsbad Municipal Water District over a condo complex destroyed by a landslide. . . The eight units of the La Costa De Marbella condominium project in the 2400 block of La Costa Avenue had to be demolished after the slow-moving slide in March 2005. The suit was settled for $12.5 million.

City officials claimed the slide was the result of heavy rains, but the court did not believe them. Maybe they can borrow some money from The Crossings. That project seems to be loaded.

Carlsbad After Charter Cityhood?

by The Editors on July 19, 2007

According to a story in the San Diego Union-Tribune the Carlsbad City Council is asking staff to continue investigating the pros and cons of becoming a “charter city.”

Carlsbad is currently a general-law city, meaning it gets its powers from state laws and the Legislature. A charter city derives its powers directly from the state constitution, giving it broader powers.

Is more power a good thing?

3D Decision Theater For Carlsbad?

by The Editors on July 15, 2007

Decisionth

Arizona State University’s three-dimentional data visualizing Decision Theater could provide a look into the future development of Carlsbadistan. According to the East Valley Tribune, when Carlsbad City Manager Ray Patchett saw ASU’s Decision Theater’s electronic model of downtown Tempe, Arizona he wanted to bring it home with him.

After flying through proposed developments at ASU, the traditional planning process seemed archaic. “It really gives you a way to get beyond just the one-dimensional piece of paper,” he said.

As the City of Carlsbad revises its development standards, Patchett thinks the Decision Theater technology will help visualize how different building heights and road widths might impact our city. Legoland has a 3-D theater and has reportedly given Patchett the go ahead to use it.

Hey, anything that will help City Planners find a vision for the Carlsbad’s future is great by us. So please bring it on. (Click here for a video tour of the Decision Theater.)

Logan Bricks Carlsbad City Council

by The Editors on July 14, 2007

Images Mugshots Logan JenkinsSan Diego Union Tribune columnist Logan Jenkins turned out a “Bricks and Bouquets” column today and guess who got a brick? The Carlsbad City Council. Logan awarded them his “Rich Robotic Golf award:”

. . . why give a pass to the council for blowing an extra $277,200 ($4,620 a month for five years) on gizmos that tell golfers the distance to the pin – and, theoretically at least, to speed up play? Good lord, this is a municipal golf course, not a private country club. It’s bad enough that players are forced to rent carts – you read correctly, no walking is allowed – but now another layer of pricey technology will separate golfers from the way the game is traditionally played.

Pretty easy target, but we can’t say we don’t disagree.

Personal Trainer for Carlsbad Firefighters

by The Editors on July 13, 2007

Left Splash 2The firemen at Carlsbad’s Station 1 have decided that it’s time to bring their health and physical fitness to the forefront and start living right. That’s why they’ve been working with Carlsbad personal trainer Jennifer Ashley. Since Jennifer’s arrival things have improved vastly.

In just more than a month, one firefighter has lost 20 pounds, while another has lost 15 pounds. According to Danny Glessar, a 43-year-old fire engineer, the biggest change has been in his energy levels. “I was tired all the time. I have two small children at home, and I work at a busy firehouse where we are woken up regularly. You’re pretty exhausted by the end of the week,” said Glessar, who has lost six pounds.

According to the story in The Coast News, Ashley hopes to work with all the firemen in Carlsbad.

“It’s reaffirms to me that I’m doing the right thing with my life,” she said. “I’m changing lives and helping so many people just by sharing my education with them.”

Surfrider Files Suit On Power Plant Permits

by The Editors on July 12, 2007

Rcs Overview Images EncinapwrAccording to the North County Times, The Surfrider Foundation has filed suit asking the court to force the San Diego Regional Water Quality Control board to reconsider the discharge permit it renewed for Carlsbad’s Encina Power Station in August 2006.

The permit allows the electrical station to suck in ocean water to cool its electricity-generating turbines, and then spit the water back out into the sea. A private company, Poseidon Resources, Inc., and the city of Carlsbad, are proposing to build a plant that would use a portion of the seawater the plant takes in, to filter out the salt and make it drinkable. . . Environmental groups say the “once-through-cooling” system harms the ocean, and that recent court decisions bar their use in the future.

This is the second time the Surfrider Foundation has tried stop the desalination plant in the permitting process.
