Carlsbad Seeks Two Good Citizens

by The Editors on June 23, 2007

Every year the mayor of Carlsbad (and the Citizens of the Year Committee) names two people (one man, one woman) as Citizens of the Year. While this whole idea has us humming “We represent the lollipop guild” to ourselves, it is nice to recognize people who are doing good things in our community.

So, if you know someone who should be nominated please contact Marilyn Strong in the City Council office at (760) 434-2830 or at mstro@ci.carlsbad.ca.us and let her know. The deadline is June 29.

June 19 City Council Wrap Up

by The Editors on June 20, 2007

We tried tuning in to the City Council meeting last night, but as most people who’ve tried to sit through a city government meeting know, they can wear on the patience. Luckily, Barbara Henry of the North County Times distilled it all down for us. Several items were postponed because councilpersons Ann Kulchin and Julie Nygaard apparently had more important things to do last night.

The council also learned Tuesday that there’s also been a delay on a item that the city has little control over — cleanup work related to the former Caulerpa taxifolia infestation at Agua Hedionda Lagoon isn’t done. “What we’ve run into, in the last several months, is the tarp removal has taken a great deal more time than we expected it to,” Craig Elliott of the Agua Hedionda Lagoon Foundation told the council.

Then 12 people showed up to discuss the Quarry Creek development plan, but Mayor Lewis decided that it would be better to discuss it when Kulchin and Nygaard were present so it was rescheduled for July 17. Thanks for coming.

Most importantly:

The council did decide on the golf cart device issue; signing up for a lease-to-purchase arrangement with UpLink Inc. of Texas for global positioning systems for 83 golf carts. The satellite-sensing devices are the latest trend in upscale golfing, industry watchers say.

Phew!

Carlsbad Ranch Living Rent Free

by The Editors on June 1, 2007

Aerial525X315-Hysnap InfoThe City of Carlsbad is looking for a new live-in Caretaker for Leo Carrillo Ranch Historic Park and wedding chapel (okay, we added that last part). The new caretaker may live at the ranch with his/her family and pay zero rent. But there are some chores involved according to the notice:

You’ll have to mow the lawn, clean the restrooms, provide guided tours of the ranch and pick up stray trash, among other things. You’ll need to look presentable during the 25 to 30 hours a week that the city expects you to perform your duties, and you’ll have keep your stereo turned down during the park’s night-time quiet hours.

You’ll also be harassed 24-7 by the family of peacocks who live there and have to spend time hanging out with a couple ghosts that are rumored to cruise the property on moonlit summer nights. We were so there until the “looking presentable” and keeping the stereo down part. But maybe you can hang with that.
