Get Preliminary Results On Measure A At 8 PM

by The Editors on February 23, 2016

CaeZByYUUAED90G

The preliminary results for today’s special election in Carlsbad’s Measure A, the Agua Hedionda lagoon shopping mall, will be reported by the County of San Diego Registrar of Voters, beginning just after 8 p.m., this evening (February 23, 2016). Click here to view that report (www.sdvote.com.) The results will include early voting at the registrar’s office and all the mail ballots received up until Election Day.

The Registrar of Voters will provide updates on its website as the count continues. The count is considered unofficial until the registrar certifies the election results. The registrar has 30 days to complete the count and certify the election results, however since the ballot only has one item, it could be done sooner. Once certified by the Registrar of Voters, the election results must be certified by the Carlsbad City Council at its next regular City Council meeting.

If you love Carlsbad please take the time and go to one of theses local polling locations and Vote NO on Measure A. That is the only way to get your voice heard.

Cole_Library_Exterior_Rendering2

One of the coolest buildings in the City of Carlsbad family of spaces, the Georgina Cole Library, will reopen to the public (after a complete facelift) on Saturday, February 27, 2016 with what the City is calling a “community appreciation event.”

The free celebration will include a reopening ceremony, tours, live music, children’s activities and more. . . Improvements to the 49-year-old Cole Library have transformed the oldest library in the city into a modern space able to meet the community’s changing needs in an increasingly digital age. . . “We appreciate the patience of our library patrons during the closure,” said City of Carlsbad Library & Cultural Arts Director Heather Pizzuto. “Community members are invited to come and explore the new spaces and amenities available at the Cole Library.”

We’re most excited with the new Friends of The Library Book Store (best book deals in town) and the new collaborative study spaces. The party beings at 10 AM on February 27, 2016. For the official word from the City of Carlsbad, please follow the jump.

City Council To Blow Half Million Dollars

by The Editors on November 18, 2015

Council_shades

In what came as no real surprise, the Carlsbad, California City Council on Tuesday night (November 17, 2015) voted to hold a special election on Tuesday, Feb. 23, 2016 for the proposed Caruso Affiliated lagoon shopping mall, rather than scheduling it for a future general election.

The special election, on a referendum which could have easily been added to the next general election at almost no cost, will cost the City of Carlsbad close to $500,000. The Council collectively said:

“We have thoroughly reviewed this plan, including extensive technical and environmental studies, and continue to believe the benefits are far greater than any other commercial development that would eventually be built on this land. We also respect the referendum process and support Carlsbad voters having an opportunity to make a final decision at the first available opportunity.”

In other words, they’re hoping to move forward with the mall as soon as possible. The referendum will need a “simple majority” of 50 percent plus one vote to be defeated.

For the official word from the City of Carlsbad, please follow the jump.

“We have a lot of opportunities along our coastline to improve safety, especially for bicyclists and pedestrians, ease traffic flow and create a better experience overall,” said Assistant City Manager Gary Barberio, who is overseeing a variety of coastal improvements in Carlsbad. “Before we make any changes, we want to make sure we have considered the input of everyone who uses the area.”

If you’d like to contribute please attend the community meeting on Thursday, Nov. 19, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Carlsbad Senior Center, 799 Pine Ave. For the official word from the City of Carlsbad, please follow the jump.

Super Shady Ad For Building A Mall

by The Editors on September 13, 2015

Nothing better outlines the outrageous lengths to which LA based shopping mall developer Caruso Affilitated will go in their campaign to obfuscate the truth about their development plans than their own disinformation ads that have been running non-stop on the web and local TV.

This edit above is in support of building a shopping mall on the shores of the Agua Hedionda lagoon. Did you hear the word “mall” used? Or shopping? Or acres of parking lots? Or anything at all related to what the developer hopes to do with the property? No. You didn’t. That’s because Caruso Affiliated would rather not mention all that. We also find an LA developer’s use of the word “our” when referring to the Carlsbad City Council a bit misleading as well. Talk about “outside interests.”

For a reminder of what Caruso Affiliated shopping malls looks like, check out their own photo of The Grove below. It was probably named after the nursery grown trees they sandwiched into holes in the concrete outside of Pottery Barn Kids. Nice use of open space, huh?

Sign The Referendum & Vote On The Mall

by The Editors on September 11, 2015

Caruso Bad
Anti mall sticker as seen on the seawall.

We believe that placing a shopping mall on the shores of Carlsbad’s Hedionda Lagoon is such a ridiculously dumb idea that we’ve found it difficult to even comment. Exactly why it’s foolish seems so obvious as to make listing the reasons redundant. We’ll cut to the chase: The Carlsbad City Council believes putting a mall on the lagoon is such a good idea that they approved Los Angeles based developer Rick Caruso’s plans without even asking the citizens of Carlsbad to vote. Luckily a group of Carlsbad citizens (Citizens For North County) believe we should vote on it. That’s why they’re out getting signatures for a referendum that will overturn the Carlsbad City Council’s approval and put the Hedionda Lagoon Mall up for vote to everyone in Carlsbad.

If you think the citizens of Carlsbad should have a voice in deciding the future of the community and a beautiful piece of open space on the shores of the Hedionda Lagoon, then you should sign the referendum.

This afternoon (Friday, September 11, 2015) you can sign the petition at the corner of Highland and Basswood from 2 PM to 6 PM. Or stop by the Dove Library (at Dove and El Camino Real) to sign. All your signature means is that you’d like the people of Carlsbad to have a vote on the Mall.

For a little more background on the issues and the current state of chicanery surrounding this mall project please follow the jump for a nice overview by Richard Riehl. [click to continue…]
