Beginning April 1, 2012 Carlsbadistan’s William D. Cannon Art Gallery will be hosting a new installation led by the work by Bay Area sculptor Joe Brubaker titled The Exquisite Gardeners.
The Exquisite Garden installation process first took shape at the Donna Seager Gallery in San Rafael, California in 2008 and was soon followed by a second, expanded collaboration at the Bakersfield Museum in 2009. For two weeks prior to the opening of the exhibition. Carlsbad will host the core group of 12 “gardeners,” comprised of sculptors, stonemasons, carpenters, painters, writers and students, as they collect and reuse throwaway materials from our culture, much of it rescued from the waterways and shorelines. Bringing their own tools, materials and expertise to the site, Joe Brubaker and the Exquisite Gardeners will create a thematic installation from this raw material. Participating local artists include Carlsbad muralist Ron Juncal, Vista sculptor Elon Ebanks and students from MiraCosta College. At the end of the exhibition, the installation is carefully dismantled to leave no trace behind and create no new waste.

Paper and Stone’s Dana (pictured above) half of the husbad/wife artist collab known as Jeanne Dana was only half kidding when he rushed to hold up a “No Photos” sign as soon as he saw us take out our camera. The artists from Sky Valley, California who were selling their faux marble sculpture this weekend at Carlsbadistan’s Art Splash have seen cameras out before. “You’re okay,” Jeanne said. “But a lot of times artists don’t like people taking pictures of their work. Someone takes a photo and then next day their stuff is is selling at Target.”
The chalk artists, on the other hand, didn’t seem to mind having their art photographed. After all, photos are the only thing that’s left after the street sweepers come rolling through. But that kind of goes with the transience of the form.
With chalk art there’s not much more than the doing. “None of us get paid to do this, you know, ” said artist Cynthia Kostylo. “We just do it for the art.”
Kostylo, who was covered head-to-toe in chalk dust says she does about seven chalk art events a year. “Some of us have kind of decided that if someone will pay our expenses and fly us out, we’ll do the the art.”
And that’s good, because without the help of artists like Kostylo Art Splash would never even happen. And without it, local schools would not get a little extra money for their art and music programs.

Carlsbadistan’s New Village Arts Theatre has decided to go “ensemble” for their 11th season. What that means is that all six of the theater’s productions will be created entirely by the same 14 actors, directors, designers and stage managers.
The Ensemble Project gives New Village Arts the opportunity to fully explore the group mind at work in a theatrical setting. The collaboration of this group will create a stronger art form than an individual alone and allow New Village Arts to continue its Ensemble experience with a better understanding of the potential of concentrated Ensemble work.

The Carlsbad Village Association will be host an art pop-up for 10 hours at 538 Grand Avenue (formerly Chandler’s) during Thursdays On the Coast on March 24, 2011.
Displaying in the gallery will be art, photography, jewelry, glass, ceramics, silks and an energy like no other. A demonstration of silk painting will be out front with Marjorie Pezzoli while across the street located in front of Paradise Cottage a fellow artist who is one of the quickest watercolor painters, Steve Alan, will be exhibiting his techniques. . . “This had been an amazing collaboration of communication and logistics. The eagerness of all the artists to come together in such a short time is a welcomed sight. Those that missed the opportunity are already lining up to get involved in this new experience. No pun intended on the words, but it keeps popping up in many conversations with local business and others alike, the renaming of the Thursdays on the Coast, The Experience is well suited,” stated Event Manager, Cheryl Ehlers.
Thursday On The Coast is March 24, 2011 from 5:30 – 8:30 PM. For more information follow the jump. [click to continue…]
