Carlsbad’s Cadillacs Of Comedy

by The Editors on June 5, 2008

ApWant to laugh your ass off this weekend without leaving Carlsbadistan? Well, comics Don Friesen (pictured right), Anthony Griffith, and Mark Anderson are putting on a show at the Carlsbad Village Theatre that is supposed to be quite funny. At least that’s what the Pasadena Weekly says.

The Cadillacs of Comedy is a fun way to bring live standup comedy to theater-going crowds — crowds that might otherwise not be inclined to come out to a show in a club and alcohol-driven atmosphere. . . . “Ideally we offer a show that will bring you to tears with laughter, but is clever and classy enough that you would be comfortable recommending it to anyone… It’s also a rare chance to work with other top headliners who are typically too busy headlining their own venues to get a chance to work together on the same bill,” he said.

“The Cadillacs of Comedy” is performed at 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays (all summer long) at the Carlsbad Village Theatre, 2822 State St., Carlsbad. Tickets are $15. Call (760) 434-5922.

New Village Arts’ Freak On Ice

by The Editors on April 2, 2008

FrozenAs North County Times staff writer Pam Kragen says, “Describing “Frozen,” a play about a pedophile serial killer, as “beautiful” may sound like an oxymoron, but not to Stephen Elton, who directs a reading of Bryony Lavery’s drama in Carlsbad on April 7.’

Frozen” won London’s Barclay Award for Best New Play in 1998. It’s the story of an American research psychologist named Agnetha, who travels to London to interview Ralph —- a British pedophile imprisoned for the rape and murder of seven young girls, including 10-year-old Rhona, over a 25-year period. Agnetha is working on a thesis that serial killers are ill, not evil, and she meets with Ralph to test her theories.

The reading stars “multi-award-winning actor” Ron Choularton as Ralph. If you’re in the mood to spend Monday evening with a pedophilic serial killer, then bring your $5 to the New Village Arts theater at 2787B State St., Carlsbad. Frozen begins at 7:30 PM.

Carlsbad Playreaders Present Neil LaBute

by The Editors on September 10, 2007

ShapeAnyone who has viewed the film Your Friends & Neighbors knows that playwright, screenwriter, and director Neil LaBute has a way of uncovering the dark, deeply disturbing realities of everyday life in shockingly benign ways. His film Nurse Betty could be one of the most uncomfortable two hours we’ve ever spent in a movie theatre. That’s exactly why we are particularly interested in seeing the Carlsbad Playreaders perform LaBute’s play The Shape of Things September 17 at 7:30 in the Ruby G. Schulman Auditorium at the Carlsbad City Library at 1775 Dove Lane.

“The Shape of Things” is Neil LaBute’s take on modern dating, filled with witty dialogue, humor, and naughty and nice relationships. As with most LaBute, he digs deeper than the surface with shocking results. Set on a college campus, Adam meets Evelyn, and he aims to please, inspiring dread and delight in his friends, Phillip and Jenny. Contemporary language and a not-to-be-missed ending! For mature audiences.

The performance is free and there are no advance reservations, however donations of $5 for adults and $1 for students is taken at the door. Follow the jump for all the details.

Et Tu Brute: Free Shakespeare in Carlsbad

by The Editors on August 13, 2007

CaesarlargeThe New Village Arts Theatre is giving Carlsbad William Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar absolutely free from August 9-18 at the theatre at 2787 State Street at 7 PM Thursdays and Fridays, at 3 and 7 PM Saturdays and at 2 PM on Sundays.

In past years, the production has taken place outdoors in one of Carlsbad’s parks. This summer, Shakespeare is staying inside so that the company can show off its new theater. . . “It allows us a greater intimacy,” said Fran Gercke, artistic director for the theater. “With ‘Julius Caesar,’ which deals with conspiracy and secrets, cloak and dagger, misdirection, and political espionage, it’s important that the audience see the little things.”

So far we’ve missed them all. Please don’t follow our lead. Go see it. We’ll remind you again, if you forget.

Legoland Stars in Fringe Toronto

by The Editors on July 9, 2007

LegolandA play being featured in this summer’s Toronto Fringe Festival (July 4-15, 2007) features Carlsbad’s Legoland as the central quest in a story about “two bizarre teenaged siblings with a completely insane story to tell about drug trafficking and popstars. . . and a wild journey across the United States,” according to the blog the Torontoist.

Both actors are note-perfect in this brilliantly written, flawlessly directed tour-de-force. There is actually no level on which it disappoints, and the packed house was in stitches for the entire hour. Go see it already!

We’d love to hear what they have to say about our favorite local theme park. But unfortunately, we’re not headed to Toronto Canada in the next week. Even more interesting would be how Legoland’s legal team feels about their trademark being used as the title of a play. Anyone?

New Village Arts Theatre Opening Night

by The Editors on June 24, 2007

Images Truewest 251Last night, Carlsbad’s New Village Arts Theatre (in the old Bauer Lumber Building at 2787 State Street) opened their production of Sam Shepard’s play True West. Unfortunately, we did not make the premiere, however, city leaders are very happy the prospect of live theater in Carlsbad’s downtown.

It’s a great attraction for us for a couple reasons,” said Carlsbad’s Chamber of Commerce president and chief executive officer, Ted Owen. “It’s award-winning theater, and the tourists who visit the hotels around the village can walk to it. Restaurants will benefit, I think it’s a win-win.”

The play runs until July 15. Click here to purchase tickets.

New Village Arts Goes West

by The Editors on May 26, 2007

Truewest 409-1The New Village Arts Theatre located in the old Bauer Lumber Building at 2787 State Street, is presenting Sam Shepard’s 1980 play True West. The story is a classic case of sibling rivalry set in a high desert shanty. One brother Austin is a screenwriter working on script for a Hollywood film, the other is a loser drifting through a life of crime. True West is a perfect play for an intimate space as the audience nearly becomes part of the action as the two brothers slowly begin to tear each other’s psyches apart until the high and low roads have become completely swapped.
True West runs at from June 16th to July 8, 2007. Click here for more info.
