Golf Course Safety No Big Concern

by The Editors on September 24, 2008

080923Planecrash1The City of Carlsbad says they have no problem with the location of The Crossings At Carlsbad Golf course even though two planes have crashed onto the property in the last 15 months, according to a story in the San Diego Union-Tribune.

“We still feel, and I think the airport plan still considers golf courses safe” for the area, city planning director Don Neu said. “The fact that we don’t have structures and large numbers of people in a small area is a benefit.”

Maybe they can just post a sign that encourages golfers to yell “Fore” whenever they see small planes falling from the sky.

Floundering Ashworth Looks For Rescue

by The Editors on September 12, 2008

Golf280Things just aren’t looking too sweet at Carlsbadistan’s once booming golf clothing manufacturer Ashworth Golf Company.

Earlier this week the company posted a lost of $9.6 million loss for the last quarter up nearly double from the same period last year, according to a story in the San Diego Union-Tribune. Now the company may be looking for a buyer.

The Carlsbad firm hired Kurt Salmon Associates to help it explore strategic alternatives. The investment bank worked with Ashworth rival Cutter & Buck, which sold last year to Swiss clothing maker New Wave Group.

Guess this is what happens when new management moves in every couple months.

Callaway CEO Agrees To Stay Awhile

by The Editors on September 8, 2008

According to a story on Golfweek.com Carlsbadistan’s number one golf company Callaway is holding on to CEO George Fellows until at least 2011 thanks to an agreement made by the company’s board of directors.

Fellows, 65, joined Callaway in August 2005. Last year, the Carlsbad, Calif.-based equipment maker posted record net sales of $1.125 billion and fully diluted earnings of $0.81, an increase of 138 percent compared with the previous year.

Fellows will be making “not less that $925,000” and is up for a bonus that could equal that salary. That’s not a bad paycheck for working in God’s favorite city.

The Crossings-At-Carlsbad Turns One

by The Editors on August 13, 2008

Thecrossings1

On August 11, 2008 Carlsbadistan’s municipal golf course celebrated its one-year birthday. Hard to believe the City’s $74 million baby is growing up so fast. The press release from KemperSports was jubilant, but it’ is the Canyon Restaurant that Kemper seems most happy about.

In the past 12 months, The Crossings has hosted 57,980 rounds of golf, exceeding its initial projection of 56,775 rounds. About 40 percent of the golfers were Carlsbad residents, while roughly 30 percent were from the surrounding San Diego County area. . . . Averaging 183 customers a day during the first seven months of 2008, the Canyons Restaurant has exceeded its daily ala- carte revenue budget for the first 12 months of operations by more than $400,000. Highlighting the fact that The Crossings is more than just a golf course is that approximately 90 percent of the restaurant’s daily patrons were non-golfers from the local community and surrounding business parks.

Happy Birthday, Crossings, though to be truthful we’d much rather be celebrating the first year birthday of Carlsbadistan’s new skatepark.

Canyons Saving The Crossings At Carlsbad?

by The Editors on July 18, 2008

Canyon FriesThe Crossings at Carlsbad, the City’s $63 million dollar (or so) golf course may “fall short” of it’s projected revenue for the first year according to a Richard Riehl column in the North County Times.

Carlsbad’s Director of Finance Lisa Irvine, told me the course had expected green fees to generate $1.6 million in revenue in the first five months of this year. It fell $300,000 short of that projection. . . . The Canyons Restaurant did much better, bringing in $829,000, 33 percent higher than the $624,000 projected return. But the loss in golf course revenue alone resulted in city plans to subsidize The Crossings at Carlsbad to the tune of $400,000 in 2008 and an additional $900,000 in 2009.

We can totally understand. We’ve eaten breakfast at Canyons Restaurant numerous times and have yet to play a round of golf. Maybe it should be marketed as a $63 million dollar restaurant, with a really nice yard. . .

Carlsbad’s Goldberg Goes Public

by The Editors on July 16, 2008

20080715 20080716 C07 Sp16Glfpublinks~P1Carlsbad’s Aaron Goldberg, 22, is “making a loud statement at the U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship at Murphy Creek,” according to a story in the Denver Post.

The former San Diego State Aztec won the two-day stroke play qualifying for the tournament, shooting a 4-under 67 Tuesday to finish 10-under entering today’s first day of match play. That was one shot better than Rickie Fowler of Murietta, Calif., and three shots in front of Pueblo’s Zach Zaremba.

Next stop for Goldbert, the U.S. Amateur Championships and then Aaron is going pro.

The War Of The Carlsbad Stick Men

by The Editors on June 6, 2008

Execfea-Golf-Titans-LargeAccording to a story on Conde Nast Portfolio.com there is a battle going on right here in Carlsbadistan between TaylorMade CEO Mark King and Callaway CEO George Fellows.

The rivalry between the two top equipmentmakers teed off more than a decade ago, but the competition has grown more intense as growth in the industry as a whole has slowed. Adding to the tension for these two companies is their proximity to one another: Both Callaway and TaylorMade, which is owned by German sporting-goods company Adidas Group, are headquartered in Carlsbad, California. Executives from both firms often dine at the same place—the popular local brewery and restaurant Karl Strauss—but at distant tables.

Callaway Drags Its Balls To China

by The Editors on May 30, 2008

Carlsbad based Callaway Golf has announced that they are closing their 70,000-square-foot golfball manufacturing facility in Gloversville, NY on July 31 and laying off 120 workers as a way of taking “advantage of lower manufacturing and shipping costs in China,” according to a story in the Triangle Business Journal.

We have an obligation to our shareholders and employees to run as efficiently as possible,” said Michele Szynal, a Callaway spokeswoman. “This obviously makes financial sense for us.”

We think Michele meant a responsibility to Callaway’s remaining employees, as they don’t seem too bothered by cutting 120.

Callaway Has Record Sales Quarter

by The Editors on May 3, 2008

Carlsbad’s Callaway Golf announced their financial results for the quarter ending March 31, 2008 and they say it’s a record quarter for net sales. Up 10% over last year at this time.

We are pleased with our results for the first quarter,” commented George Fellows, President and CEO. “The improvements made in our product development process and supply chain have positively contributed to our ability to achieve record first quarter sales.”

Unfortunately, we missed the conference call.
