If you’re a member of the San Diego Zoo you can get a free taco, burrito, or salad at Chipotle today, September 3, 2008 between 10 AM and 3 PM. So if you’re looking for a free lunch, this may be your lucky day.
This is just a friendly reminder to Carlsbadistan residents who have Zoo memberships. Because luckily, we don’t have a Chipotle in Carlsbadistan. Click the link for the free food nearest you.

Last night the Carlsbad City Council approved a plan from Strategic Property Services Advisers for a PF Chang’s Chinese Bistro and a two-story, 44,000 square foot “complex of boutique clothing shops” (including H&M) across the street from the Carlsbad Premium Outlet stores on Paseo del Norte, according to a Barbara Henry story in the North County Times.
“That area has been waiting for a good (project) … and it seems that they have found something,” Councilman Mark Packard said before the council’s 4-0 vote, with Councilwoman Julie Nygaard absent.
If we’re going to have another mall in Carlsbad, it might as well be there.

Thanks to some investigational help from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms the fire that caused nearly $1 million in damages to Sammy’s Woodfired Pizza has been officially ruled accidental.
A natural gas leak sparked an explosion and fire that consumed the Sammy’s Woodfired Pizza on Avenida Encinas, just north of Palomar Airport Road, according to authorities.
Guess the economy hasn’t gotten that bad just yet. Phew!

This morning commuters on South I-5 were treated to billowing black smoke and bumper to bumper traffic as Sammy’s Woodfired Pizza on Avenida Encinas cooked up a little more than delicious pizza.
A Carlsbad police officer working traffic duty in front of the restaurant heard an explosion about 8 a.m. and called in the emergency. Forty-eight firefighters from Carlsbad, Encinitas and Vista were called to the scene. . . .the fire started in the back of the restaurant where the kitchen, electrical panels and gas lines are located, Carlsbad Fire Marshal James Weigand said.
The fire caused $1 million in damages. Luckily, no one was injured.

As much as we hate chain restaurants, there is something about PF Chang’s China Bistro that forces us to drive to Fashion Valley at least once a month for hot and sour soup and vegetarian lettuce wraps.
That’s why we’re shamelessly excited by the fact that the Carlsbad planning commission has approved “a P.F. Chang’s Chinese bistro, a second yet-to-be-determined restaurant and a two-story, 44,400-square-foot complex of upscale shops,” on Paseo del norte next to King’s Fish House across from the Premium Outlet Mall.
Developers had planned to put a hotel on the 7-acre site along Paseo del Norte, but reconsidered because of height and parking limitations, said Peter Aylward, president of the company that owns the land. . . . “Architecturally, I think it’s a good thing for Carlsbad,” Aylward said as he described how the project would look from the east on Paseo del Norte and from the west on Interstate 5.
The project still needs the approval of the City Council, but then, they seem to love taking empty land and filling it with stuff.

Few things in life are more fun than rolling your balls on the beach. And at 28th Annual Vigilucci’s Bocce Ball World Championships on Saturday July 12, 2008 at Del Mar’s Dog Beach that exactly what 300 people are going to do.
What’s the Carlsbadistan hook? This year the money being raised at the event is going to the Carlsbad Boys & Girls Club.
“It’s such an awesome event, North County’s cleaner answer to the Over-the-Line tournament in San Diego,” said Pat Maldi, marketing director for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Carlsbad. “It’s a party on the beach —- bocce ball with sand, food and fun.”
The event is sold out, but the next best thing to playing with your balls is watching someone else play with theirs. Play begins at 8:15 AM and complimentary parking (and a Shuttle) is available at the Del Mar Racetrack. For more information click here to email Pat Maldi, or call (760) 729-0207 x303.

Tip Top Meats owner John Haedrich is a big bidder when it comes to the San Diego County Fair’s junior livestock auction. But, according to a story in the San Diego Union-Tribune, he’s not buying the animals for his business. He’s bidding up the auctions to help the 4-H and Future Farmers of America kids make more money.
Towering over the children at 6 feet, 6 inches, “Big John,” as the auctioneer called him, was an intimidating figure. As the children made their way to Haedrich’s seat to thank him for his help, his gentleness shone through his warm toothy grin. Haedrich gripped the childrens’ hands between his own and offered words of encouragement.
Somehow, we’re not surprised. And it’s probably another reason why we breakfast at Tip Top Meats. Danke von allen uns, John.

Carlsbad’s own fine food company The Carlsbad Gourmet will be featured on the first episode of the Food Network’s brand new show Road Tasted with the Neely’s.
The new program is a mix of two shows from last season Road Tasted and Down Home with the Neelys. Now, rather than cooking at home Pat and Gina Neely are hitting the road “in search of the best local, handcrafted foods along with finding all sorts of people, personalities and adventure along the way.” Their first stop: Carlsbad to spend the day with Russ Bruhn in the Carlsbad Strawberry Fields.
Airing July 13, 2008, the show will feature the Carlsbad Gourmet’s Strawberry Jalapeño Spread along with their “Award Winning Ruby Red Strawberry BBQ Sauce.” Not to mention amazing views of both the Strawberry Fields and The Flower Fields.
It’s nice to see Carlsbadistan getting a little national recognition for fine flavors. Now, we just need to taste some to see if it really lives up to the hype.

On March 20, 2008 we reported on a proposed new hotel on Ocean St. at the offshore parking lot that would feature a “roof-top restaurant.” Now, the Lumiére Carslbad Village Hotel has been approved by the City’s design review board, according to a story in the North County Times.
Assistant city planner Austin Silva said commissioners and city staff liked the architectural drawings for the proposed hotel. “They liked the design of it because it’s not a typical stucco with a red-tile roof,” he said. “(The architect) gave it a beach cottage theme.”
Now it’s just up to the City Council and the California Coastal Commission to decide whether work on the project can begin.
