According to a newly approved facilities master plan for the Carlsbad Unified School District Buena Vista and Magnolia Elementary schools could be closed for good. The North County Times reports that it is being discussed.
Nothing would happen quickly, board President Kelli Moors stressed Thursday as she discussed the planning document that the board approved late Wednesday night. “I think the thing to keep in mind is that both schools will continue to operate in the coming (school) year,” she said.

Tom Troy, an Audubon board member, is leading a walk to help identify birds by sight and sound this Saturday (June 30) at 8:30 a.m. at the Buena Vista Lagoon Landing on Jefferson Street. And believe it or not, birding is fun, especially with good binocs.

This Friday night (June 29) is Teen Late Night @ The Library (for 6th Grade and older). After the library closes a crew from the Rueben H. Fleet Science Center is going to do a hands-on experience about collecting evidence from a crime scene. It’s kind of like supervised cops and robbers. Advanced sign-up is required. And hopefully, it’s not too late. We never know with this stuff.

If things go as the Carlsbad Unified School District hopes the next five years will bring $223 million of improvements to district facilities including rebuilding Carlsbad High School, building a second high school, and upgrading six other schools.
Known as the facilities master plan, the 137-page document details $223 million in spending and provides construction options for each project, including costs and scheduling. The master plan includes some changes from previous district thinking. . . “The facilities master plan is not just another binder that will sit on my shelf,” school board President Kelly Moors said Tuesday. “It’s a working document that I will carry with me as I visit schools and talk to residents. It’s a step-by-step description of what will happen, and when, at each site.”
We’re looking forward to it. For all the details, click the link.

At a meeting this Wednesday (6 PM Carlsbad City Hall, 1200 Carlsbad Village Drive) Carlsbad school board trustees will meet to discuss a proposed $80 million budget for the upcoming fiscal year. Problem is it’s about $1 million more than the schools have coming in.
Technically, it’s a deficit-spending budget,” said Walter Freeman, the district’s deputy superintendent of business services. However, Freeman said, the shortfall will be offset by $1.3 million is state grants the district received last year but plans to use this year to hire more high school counselors and buy art, science and physical education supplies.”
Might we suggest the “shortfall” be made up with bake sales and magazine subscription drives?

The new Carlsbad Country Day school (infants through kindergarten) has installed 154 solar panels from Clean Power Systems that will save the school an average of $770 per month in electricity bills or about “$400,00 over a 30 year period.”
We’re very excited about our new school and its impact on our community not only as an educational institution that serves the children’s learning and development in their early years but as a shining example of how we can bring to bear the newest renewable technology to conserve energy and make our planet a better place to live for future generations,” says Darrell Reed, owner and chief executive officer of Carlsbad Country Day School.
We’re sure the school will pass on these energy savings to the parents in tuition discounts. Right? Because that would be great.
