As much as we’d like to think that the taxes we pay to the State of California could support a reasonable public school system, here in Carlsbad that just isn’t the case. In fact, the Carlsbad Unified School District is headed into an $11 million deficit for the 2012-13 school year. That’s why the work of the Carlsbad Education Foundation is so important to the students in Carlsbad. On November 1, 2011 the CEF kicked off their annual fund drive.
Here’s what they did with the money this year:
Carlsbad Educational Foundation announces the release of $350,000 in funds to assist 15 key initiatives that support students within the Carlsbad Unified School District during the 2011-2012 school year. Among the initiatives are essential music, science and special programs that impact 11,000 students throughout the district.

The week of August 1, 2011 Carlsbad’s national dance competition award winning Lancer Dancers will be sharing some of their deep dance skills with young dancers grades K-7 during Jr. Lancer Dancer Summer Camp.
Team Co-Captain, Camille Posard shares her theory on success, “Last year we were the Cinderella Story winning the National Championship with 8 rookies on the team and 5 freshmen, but it was hard work and determination not experience that made it possible. We will be sharing what we learned with the dancers at camp this summer”. . . . The Lancer Dancers are excited to be able to share their dance skills, choreography, and teamwork with other young dancers during this week of camp. Their goal for the camp is to inspire others with their love of dance, but more importantly, how teamwork, dedication, and hard work can take you just about anywhere that you set your sights on! Lancer Dancer, Katie Park, describes how camp is about more than dance, “Young dancers will not only learn dances, but leadership qualities and discipline that help you succeed in other aspects of life.”
All the five-day camp requires the will to dance and a $100 donation to the Lancer Dancers. For more information click here and/or follow the jump. [click to continue…]

Want your child to learn about American Red Cross water safety at the Legoland Waterpark this June? Then the Whale Tales program might be for you. Like all things at Legoland, however, you’ll need a whale sized wallet. First of all the child must get in to the park. If you have a $99 pass for your child and a $129 pass for yourself, then the four-day, eight-hour program will only cost you $40. Without the passes it will only cost $240 for one child, and that’s with Legoland’s.
The four-day WHALE Tales course is taught by LEGOLAND certified lifeguards and covers basic water safety and more. Sessions are Monday-Thursday, 4-6 p.m. June 6-9; June 13-16; June 20-23. Call 760-918-5347 for more information.
Or, you could just pay $50 and get the same thing at the Monroe Street Pool without all the Lego brand indoctrination The choice is yours.

Carlsbad’s Valley Middle School was on lockdown this morning (May 12, 2011) from 10:50 AM to 11:17 AM after one student reportedly mentioned a bomb on the campus. Parents of students at Valley received the following text after the school was cleared and reopned.
Students are safe. VMS was on lockdown from 10:50 until 11:17 as a preventative measure after an unconfirmed report by a student of the possibility of a bomb.
According to the Carlsbad Police Department one student was in custody for “making a threat” following the lockdown. This is the second bomb scare in Carlsbad in a little over a week. The first was on May 4, 2011 when a “suspicious device” was found at the Cole Library.
Hopefully this one was simply a misguided middle school prank, as 10News is now reporting.

We’re usually pretty hard on Legoland California for what we think are their normally outrageous ticket prices, but from now until Christmas Day tickets to Legoland are only $9.99 per person.
That’s right. Not $59, but $9.99 That is reason enough to go. In fact, we’re thinking we’ll probably visit the theme park for our third time ever.
The deal was announced today on Twitter (@legoland_ca) and as might be imaged rocketed through the social web. Click the graphic for all the details or visit the Legoland facebook page.
