Thanks to a grant from our favorite Carlsbadistan-based life sciences company, Life Technologies, the Carlsbad Education Foundation is going to make sure all 14 schools in the district are able to compete in the First Lego League International Robotics Challenge.
By partnering with the Life Technologies Foundation, CEF is able to sponsor one team per school, including all registration fees, two robots, related supplies, training and resource materials. . . . “The Carlsbad Educational Foundation is thrilled to partner with Life Technologies to bring the exciting FIRST LEGO League program to all the schools in the Carlsbad Unified School District,” said Valin Brown, CEO of the Carlsbad Educational Foundation. “This highly innovative and forward-thinking program is the latest example of how CEF continually seeks ways to bridge the gap between classroom and real-world experiences. To that end, FIRST LEGO League represents an outstanding opportunity for us to promote educational excellence while inspiring young people to build science, engineering and technology skills.”
Now, rather than spending most of their time raising money, the robot heads in the Carlsbad Unified School District will be able to focus on building robots and bringing home a world title. For more info, follow the jump.

During the summer the the Carlsbad High School Varsity Dance Team, The Lancer Dancers, placed first in their home qualifying routine at the Elite UDA Dance Camp held at the University of San Diego. That gives them the opportunity to compete in the UDA National Championships in Orlando, Florida February 5-7, 2009. Now they just have to raise the money to get the entire team there. But they have an idea. . .
The Lancer Dancers are teaching dance classes for children in Kindergarten through Sixth Grade at CHS. . . The Kid’s Classes will begin September 23rd for and run for 10 weeks. Dance students will learn dances, technique, and have a chance to perform at the Lancer Dancer Showcase in December at the Carlsbad Performing Arts Center as a “Jr. Lancer Dancer.”

For the second week in a row we snuck up to the Carlsbad Sheraton for an epic view of the Legoland fireworks at 8:30 PM on Saturday night. From the lower parking lot we could see the fireworks from the ground to the sky and be so close we could almost feel them exploding overhead.
Definitely a great way to kick off an evening in Carlsbadistan, but next Saturday night August 29, 2009 at 8:30 PM is the last fireworks show for the summer. Don’t miss it.

According to their website, Jon and Karen Whitehead started Carlsbadistan’s Captain Cooks Culinary Academy for Kids because they wanted to combine their “passions for cooking, healthy eating and the environment.” Captain Cooks offers three different cooking classes for kids 4-7, 7-13, and 11-16.
IRON CHEF: Each day our young chefs will create 2-3 dishes out of a secret ingredient that will be introduced to them each day. They will learn valuable lessons such as how to work together as a team and how to be creative with what is in the fridge. Our chefs will guide them through the process of looking up recipes in cookbooks and using their imaginations to create tasty dishes. Ages 4-7, 7-13 and 11-16.
AROUND THE WORLD: In this camp we will take a culinary journey around the world and experience different foods each day from Italy, France, Greece, Mexico and China. Kids will learn about cultures and experience new tastes. Ages 4-7, 7-13, 11-16
BASICS OF BAKING: Young chefs will learn the basics of baking, from yeast breads to quick breads, pies and pastries, pizza dough and breadsticks, cookies and cakes. Ages 4-7, 7-13, and 11-16.
There still are a few (like six) spots left in classes this summer. Click the link for more info.

Taylor Chapin (pictured far left), one of the founders of Kids Helping Kids effort said, “I can’t imagine a better way to spend part of my summer than helping the Boys & Girls Club.
