Surf Academy Owner Robbed In Baja

by The Editors on November 14, 2007

Pat Weber, the owner of the Carslbad-based San Diego Surfing Academy, decided to escape the fires last month by taking his girlfriend to Baja for a short surf trip at Cuatro Casas. Things only got worse once they got into Mexico, according to the San Diego Union Tribune.

Just after sundown Oct. 23, two men wearing military clothing and ski masks confronted the couple. Weber said he initially refused to come out of his motor home, but surrendered after the robbers fired a shot into the vehicle. “They made us get down on all fours – execution position – and put guns to our heads. . . The gunmen sexually assaulted his girlfriend before stealing $10,000 worth of computers, video cameras and other gear, he said.

Weber stopped in Ensenada and reported the robbery. Apparently, they weren’t the first to be robbed at Cuartro Casas. Click the link for the rest of the story on the downside of Baja surf trips.

More Flights at McClellan-Palomar Airport?

by The Editors on September 11, 2007

14087244 240X180According to NBCSandiego.com Carlsbad’s McClellan-Palomar Airport, which is already “one of the busiest small airports, could soon have more traffic.” Consultants have apparently suggested that due to North County’s growth it might not be a bad idea to begin looking into direct service to Denver, Houston, and other cities.

Carlsbad resident Dwight Webster said he’s read the reports. He said the plan calls for “potentially increasing the flights from 16 daily right now, to somewhere between say, 30 and 40, based on projections in that review.” . . . He and other residents said that means more noise over their homes and more risks of accidents or emergency landings.

Sure, there a many homes being built in a around the airport (Bressi Ranch) but what about the safety of Carlsbad’s golfers?

GPS Surf Safari to Carlsbad

by The Editors on August 23, 2007

32576169-2-200-0-1Bonnie Cha is a senior editor at CNET.com. On her blog Miss Direction she uses, then writes about GPS devices. This weekend (August 24-26) she is hitting the road and heading for Carlsbad with the TomTom Go 270 GPS as her co-pilot.

My friend Kristen just moved there with her fiance Mike, so I’m going to visit their new crib and hit the waves at Tamarack and Moonlight Beach (you’ve been warned San Diego surfers; steer clear of the girl with the yellow surfboard). I’m looking forward to paddling out in warmer waters, enjoying the sunshine, and good times with friends.

Bonnie says she’ll be blogging the whole trip. So if you’d like to see what a NorCal tech diva thinks of Carlsbad and surfing Tamarack check her blog out right here. We’ll keep you posted as well.

And Bonnie, if you read this, leave a comment and we’ll go out for a surf.

Visitors Bureau Promotes Birdwatching

by The Editors on August 23, 2007

Sometimes we have to ask ourselves if the crew at the Carlsbad Convention & Visitors Bureau is on the program. Their latest press release, designed ostensibly to bring tourist dollars into the city, hinges entirely on how great the fall bird watching is here.

Let your wild side take charge and come to Carlsbad on San Diego’s beautiful North Coast when birding is at its best. . . In the fall, Mother Nature fills the sky with voluminous white clouds and the migratory birds begin long flights to winter homes. A vital sanctuary along the migratory path and a winter destination is Carlsbad’s Batiquitos Lagoon, one of the few remaining tidal wetlands on the southern California coast.

We’re David Allen Sibley fans too, but is hiking around the lagoon with binocs really that big a vacation drawn for Carlsbadistan? Follow the link for the entire release.
