Jefferson 5th Grade Band Christmas Concert

by The Editors on December 20, 2007

Tonight at the Village Faire Mall in the heart of Carlsbadistan, the Jefferson Elementary School fifth grade band electrified shoppers and parents with a slew of Christmas classics in their first public performance of the year. About half of the program consisted of tunes played on the recorder directed by Carlsbad Unified School District’s Teacher of the Year, Karen Stencil and the other half was symphonic band directed by Steve Ebner.

Now, if we could just get that oh-so-hooky tune Good King Wenceslas out of our heads.

Okay, How About One More?

by The Editors on December 13, 2007

Taylor Knox was eliminated today during his round two heat against Kauai’s Roy Powers. So that’s it for Taylor in this contest, and that might just be it for our 2007 Billabong Pro Pipeline Masters coverage as it looks like it’s going to be pretty flat for the remainder of the waiting period.

[Editors’ Note: Here, we even have some video from day three, but don’t tell anyone.]

A Little Of What We Saw Yesterday. . .

by The Editors on December 12, 2007

Other than the fact that Taylor Knox got fourth place in his first heat, this really has nothing to do with Carlsbadistan. But we shot it, so peep it if you want. It’s day one of the 2007 Billabong Pro Pipeline Masters from the North Shore of Oahu.

Santa Kicks Off Christmas In Carlsbadistan

by The Editors on December 2, 2007

The Carlsbad Fire Department’s classic fire truck had a special passenger this afternoon as hundreds of kids and their parents gathered for the annual Carlsbad Rotary Holiday Tree Lighting ceremony at the Village Faire in the heart of Carlsbadistan. And who was this special rider? It was Santa Claus.

Img 1366Tree-lighting guests were treated to free hot apple cider, coffee and cookies, as well as a Christmas card making station for the kids. Santa actually allowed strangers to sit on his lap while elves snapped Polaroid pictures for the kids.

Before Mayor Bud Lewis officially lit the tree, the crowd enjoyed a girls choir from St. Patricks as well as several large groups of dancers including Jazzersize, Irish traditional dancing, and the ubiquitous Carlsbad High School Lancer Dancers.

We got cold and left before hearing the Mayor’s words to kick off the season, but we’re going to guess that they were wonderfully appropriate.

Agua Hedionda Lagoon Patrol

by The Editors on August 19, 2007

After publishing reports of motorboaters’ rampant disregard for the “passive use/no motorboats” area on Carlsbad’s Agua Hedionda Lagoon we decided we should check it out for ourselves.

The buoys are back up (there are five of them). And, after watching for approximately 15 minutes on Saturday August 18, 2007 we found that the majority of the boaters were respectful of the buoys. We did however see one boat that seemed to be ignoring the no fly zone all together. Click the video below to see more:
