Retail

215As much as we hate stumbling through the over-stuffed grandma clutter of Linda’s Gift, we often find ourselves forced to squeeze through the maze of knick-knacks in search of that special treat or card. So you can imagine our surprise when we nearly knocked over a whole stack of large tins from Tea Forte.

Tea Forte’s individually hand crafted silken infusers reportedly provide the world’s finest method to brew a cup of tea. “The open weave of the fabric allows the water to flow freely around the teas, allowing the tea leaves to unfurl and the flavors to mingle in the large open form of the infuser.”

Each Large Tin contains 15 of Tea Forte’s stylishly designed silken tea infusers with the choice of Classic (three infusers of each: Black Currant, Earl Grey, English Breakfast, Darjeeling, Orange Pekoe), Exotic (three infusers of each: African Solstice, Bombay Chai, Ginger, Green Tango & White Ambrosia) or Sampler (three infusers of each: Black Currant, Chamomile, Citrus Mint, Earl Grey, & Oasis).

The holidays can often get a little out-of-control hyper and there is nothing that calms things down like a hot cup of tea. That’s why Tea Forte Large Tin ($24) is one of our favorite hostess gifts.

For the next 12 days (December 1-12) we are presenting the Carlsbadistan 12 Days of Christmas Gift Guide. Each day we will add one new gift idea from Carlsbadistan. Welcome to day one.

Glovables-1When it comes to a Christmas wish list, most women aren’t writing down a pair of rubbergloves. But they might if they knew about these Glovables we found at the Poached Pear on State Street in the Village. The Gloveables’ signature oilcloth gauntlet adds just a touch of spice to doing the dishes (think lingerie for housework) and are perfect for those 50s housewives or rockabilly girls in your life. They retail for $15.00 and are available in an array of colors and gauntlet fabrics.

Orange 21 May Buy No Fear Retail Stores

by The Editors on July 19, 2007

In a recent press release Carlsbad-based Orange 21 (the parent company of Spy Optic) has announced that it is in discussions with Carlsbad-based No Fear Inc. regarding the purchase of 40 No Fear retail stores. But there is one little glitch: Mark Simo, the Chairman and CEO of Orange 21 is also the founder, former CEO, a director, and stockholder of No Fear, so:

As a result of Mr. Simo’s position, the board of directors of Orange 21 established the Special Committee comprised entirely of independent directors to evaluate and recommend a course of action with respect to the possible strategic transaction.

Anyone want to take any bets on what course of action will be recommended by this “special committee?”

Carlsbad Village Gets Organized

by The Editors on July 13, 2007

A group of Carlsbad Village business people have formed an organization to help guide the development of Carlsbad’s downtown area it’s called the Carlsbad Village Improvement Partnership.

We have all the potential, being two blocks from the beach, to become a Carmel, Laguna Beach or Newport Beach — to be that kind of upscale beach community. We just need to have the vision and the people to make that happen,” said Jodi Dickson, owner of the Poached Pear and a member of a working group appointed to lay the foundation for the new organization.

We’re not all that interested in Carlsbad becoming Newport or Laguna Beach, but hey, anything to stem the flow of junk shops in the downtown is fine with us.

Carlsbad iPhone Countdown: The Morning After

by The Editors on June 30, 2007

Iphone Vista

For those following along here’s how it went: we did not make an Apple iPhone purchase, yet. We chose Sue Palmer over standing inline at AT&T. We do, however, have a friend who made a run for the border and pulled into an undisclosed AT&T Store in Vista at 4 PM. After waiting in line for two hours he was able to snap some photos and snag a 4 gig, which immediately sent him into the throws of an inferiority complex. In a late evening email he said: “I have not broken the seal yet. I have decided to swap it for the 8 gig.”

New IphoneBut as anyone knows, it’s nearly impossible to sit with a new piece of Apple technology without opening it. Moments later we got another email. . . “I opened the package and it is not as sleek as it looks in the ads….”

Side Note: the Fashion Valley Apple Store opens at 10 AM this morning and according to the Apple iPhone Availability Page they still have phones (as does every Apple store in California).

Below The Side Note: Our photos from the Plaza Camino Real line were picked up and included in the Gizmodo.com iPhone photo gallery. Two of them.

Carlsbad iPhone Countdown: T – Five Hours

by The Editors on June 29, 2007

Iphone Pcr-1

The Plaza Camino Real has been staked out. At 10:30 The Carlsbad Four had grabbed their places in line in front the AT&T store right outside Sears on the lower level. Honz (far right, blue shirt) was at the front of the line. “I got here at 6 AM,” he said. “And walked right in to the mall.” Chris (second in line), who works from home had his Macbook open and was doing work. “If I’d have known the line was going to be like this I would have slept in a little longer.” Allen and Brad (who were bringing up the rear of the line at 10:40) didn’t arrive until 10 AM.

Iphone Pcr2When we asked them how many phones they were going to buy, they said, “They already told us we could only buy one each.”

If each store indeed has 20 Apple iPhones as reported, then there may still be room at the Plaza, or across the street in Oside next to Trader Joes.

Currently, Apple stock is holding at the $121 mark. Damn, we’re going to be bummed not having an iPhone tonight. Forget about what we said yesterday.

[Editors’ Note: Allen, Brad, or Chris, if you can, please update us on your progress in the comments section.]

Carlsbad iPhone Countdown: T – Five Days

by The Editors on June 25, 2007

Iphone Beck-1

We apologize in advance for caring entirely too much about this block of electronica. We are pathetic in every way. That said, we are now five days away from the Apple iPhone’s arrival in Carlsbad. And if our math is correct there will only be 100 iPhones in all of North County (including Escondido), so factor that in on your Friday June 29th plans.

Here is the latest AT&T info from The Apple Phone Show blog:

We’ve been able to confirm (by at least two reliable sources inside AT&T and elsewhere) the following details…

1) AT&T stores will close at 4:30 pm Friday and re-open at 6:00 pm to start selling the phone.

2) AT&T employees have received special training on the iPhone averaging six hours per employee.

There are three more bullet points, however, you’ll have to click the link to get it all. And again, we’re very sorry to keep bothering you with fan-boy hype. We just can’t help ourselves.

Carlsbad iPhone Countdown: T – Seven Days

by The Editors on June 22, 2007

Friends have been asking us lately whether we’re getting the Apple iPhone on June 29 or not. Many have suggested that we buy one first so they can check it out before they sink half a thousand dollars into a shiny metal rectangle. For the past few weeks we’ve been saying, “Anh, we’re going to wait until the first wave goes out, then think about it.”

That was before we saw this 20 minute iPhone. A guided tour video. We dare you to try watching this without feeling the kind of techno-lust that would make standing in line all day so you can snatch one up at 6 PM next Friday seem almost reasonable.

For more info on where to buy one in North County check our preview post: T – Nine Days.

Index Hero20070621

The world-wide countdown to the launch of the Apple iPhone has begun, and here in Carlsbad we feel the techno pull just as stongly as our big city brotheren. Launch date: June 29, 2007 at 6 PM. So, if you’re wondering where to pick one up in Carlsbad, here is the info:

The AT&T Store at 2525 El Camino Real, Suite 162 (that’s in the Plaza Camino Real mall).

For info on more locations in North Country or the Apple Store at UTC or at Fashion Valley click the links. When the lines start cueing up, we’ll be there.

White’s Tennesse Shoe Demo

by The Editors on June 17, 2007

Shaun WtennCarlsbad’s Shaun White was in Franklin Tennessee yesterday putting on a show for the kids at the Journeys Backyard BBQ tour at CoolSprings Galleria in Williamson County. But not all the kids were happy.

Christian Bush, 10, of Joelton, was disappointed last year because skateboarder and MTV star Bam Margera, wasn’t on the program. “I didn’t like it very much last year because Bam wasn’t there,” he said.
He left unfulfilled again this year because Margera had to cancel his appearance after suffering a lacerated liver earlier in the week, event organizers said.

That didn’t stop Shaun and the rest of the Carlsbad-based Adio Footwear team from putting on a show including Shaun pulling “a couple of 720-degree spins in warm conditions.”
