Carlsbadistan’s Pizza Port kicked serious ass last weekend at the Great American Beer Festival in Denver, Colorado. Pizza Port nabbed nine medals in all, seven of them from the Carlsbad location including Large Brewpub of the Year, according to a story in the San Diego Union-Tribune.
Brewpub ops director Jeff Bagby (pictured right) was pleased.
“I kind of prepared myself for the worst,” said Jeff Bagby, director of brewpub operations for the Pizza Ports in Carlsbad, Solana Beach and San Clemente. “I was prepared to come home with nothing.”
Congrats to Bagby and the Pizza Port team. We know the beer is good, but it’s even nicer to know it’s the best beer in America.

Each time we roll in to Mulloys Fine Jewelry at 2978 State Street in the Village of Carlsbadistan, we are surprised. Surprised by the friendly staff, by the depth of high quality merchandise, and by the fact that we don’t do it more often as it is well within walking distance. This month, there is even more of a reason to be surprised as Mulloys celebrates “Honor Our Military” month.
“During these times of uncertainty in the economy, I’ll do whatever it takes to help my fellow Americans serving our country save money and still get the respect, dignity and customer service they deserve,” said the founder of Mulloys Fine Jewelry. “I want to continue to be a part of all of our service members lives and in doing so, I ask if you’ve had a terrific experience at MulloysJewelry.com then please spread the word and take advantage of our Friends and Family referral program specially directed to those Military servicemen and women.”
Obviously, these deals won’t do a whole lot for us, but for those in the Armed Forces it could make a huge difference. Follow the jump for even more special offers. . . [click to continue…]

One of our favorite San Diego burger joints Hodad’s is apparently coming to Carlsbadistan’s Village Faire at the corner of Carlsbad Village Drive and Carlsbad Boulevard, according to leasing information obtained on The Free Library.com.
Hodad’s leased 1,900 square feet of retail space for $217,738 for five years at 300 Carlsbad Village Drive, Suite 202, in Carlsbad.
Suite 202 is the current location of Mr. Peabody’s. No shirt. No shoes. No problem. Damn. Our mouths are already watering. Should we get in line now?

According to a report on Theme Park Insider it appears that the Blackstone Group (owners of Merlin Entertainment which in turn owns Legoland) may be in the process of purchasing SeaWorld, bringing two of San Diego’s major tourist attractions under one roof.
The complete list of properties of Busch Entertainment Group are Busch Gardens-Tampa Bay, Busch Gardens-Willamsburg, SeaWorld Orlando, SeaWorld San Antonio, SeaWorld San Diego, Discovery Cove, Aquatica, Adventure Island, Water Country USA and Sesame Place. . . Blackstone already owns a 50-percent stake in the Universal theme parks and also has ties to Hilton Hotels Corp. The company is headquartered in New York City.
According to a story on WESH.com no announcement of the sale has been made. KSAT.com, however, is reporting rumors from an inside source at Blackstone:
Blackstone has purchased either 50 percent or 51 percent of SeaWorld, according to the rumor. The Blackstone employee also said two conference rooms have been set aside at SeaWorld Orlando on Wednesday to share the news of new ownership with employees. . . Projections about the sale price are hovering around $1 billion recently. A London paper reported that one of Blackstone’s holdings, “Merlin Entertainment Group,” which holds Madame Tussauds, was about to go public.
Still no official word. We’ll keep you posted.

We’ve been watching the construction on Carlsbadistan’s Beach Terrance Inn for months now, often wondering why the beachside hotel would remodel during the summer, but then we decided they know what they’re doing. After last week’s grand opening it appears we were right.
The hotel’s new luxury upgrades include completely re-configured and enlarged lobby; custom stained glass windows in lobby doors and windows; new mahogany window casings; new Palmwood flooring with beach pebble trim; refurbished rooms and common areas; Italian ceramic tile in entryways of many rooms; custom cast glass panels in all guestrooms (crafted by local artist); enlarged bathrooms with granite vanities and walk-in showers; 42” LCD flat screen TVs in all rooms; 310-count bed linens; waffle weave bathrobes in all rooms; and environmentally-friendly bath/body amenities and housekeeping products.
There really is no better place in Carlsbad to stay, literally on the beach. We recommend this property.

After the Carlsbad City Council approved changes made to the Posiedon Desal plant plans several groups are vowing to sue because the City skipped a lengthy environmental review process, according to a Michael Burge story in the San Diego Union-Tribune.
The council approved those as an addendum to the environmental impact report it OK’d in 2006, without reopening the time-consuming environmental review process. . . Marco Gonzalez, an attorney for the Coastal Environmental Rights Foundation and Coastkeeper, told the council it should have reopened the environmental process to allow for public review. . . “I’ll simply say we’ll have to see you in court again,” Gonzalez said.
For its part Poseidon says they’ve heard these arguments before and they have been “rejected by all the other agencies and by the courts.”

The City of Carlsbad is now accepting proposals from organizations to “finance, design and manage the city’s new technology business incubator program.” The winner will get free office space and the support of the City to help grow clean, green businesses in the community.
The incubator will serve as a place for entrepreneurs to develop sustainable technologies and will provide entrepreneurs support and access to resources and information that might otherwise be inaccessible to them, such as education, contacts and capital. . . . The project is anticipated to be operational by March 2010. When complete, the technology business incubator will function as a public-private partnership in which the city provides the project facility and the contracted organization will develop the program and look for opportunities for public and private grants to provide funding.
The request for proposal is available on the city’s Web site and proposals can be submitted until Monday, Oct. 19, at 3 p.m. The city will award the contract in December.

Before it was built Carlsbadistan’s Legoland was positioned as a tiny little theme park “just for small kids” that would be happy staying small. Each year, however, seems to bring new expansion plans from the Merlin Entertainments Group owned theme park.
First it was an aquarium, then the company got the city to change their parking requirements so they could build a hotel and restaurants, now according to the LA Times Legoland is asking the City of Carlsbad to allow them to put in a 5.5 acre waterpark.
San Diego County theme park Legoland has submitted its plan to the city of Carlsbad to build a 5.5-acre water attraction in the park’s northern section, officials said Friday. . . .The water park’s cost and design have yet to be determined, but Legoland spokeswoman Julie Estrada said it would be open by next summer.
The water park, like the aquarium, would have it’s own entry fee meaning there would actually be three amusement parks where previously only one stood. As one Carlsbadistan.com news tipper asks, “I wonder how this will affect the water park at Alga Norte.”
