Legoland Looking To Build In Florida?

by The Editors on June 21, 2009

Legoland-LogoMerlin Entertainments, the company that owns Legoland California, may be looking to build a new Legoland in Florida on the site of “Florida’s first theme park” Cypress Gardens, according to a report on Screamscape.com.

One of the website’s readers was apparently invited to take an online survey.

The questions were all about building Legoland Florida, which would be based on the basic design and layout of the Legoland California park, and feature about 50 different rides and attractions. . . The survey asked some basic questions about ticket price levels as well trying to tell how interested people would be in visiting Legoland Florida on their next trip to the area. . . However the most interesting thing of all were questions that asked if Legoland chose to build their park on the site of Cypress Gardens, would you be more or less interested in visiting.

If plans go through it looks like Carlsbad will be a little less unique.

Judi Sheppard Missett’s Jazzersize

by The Editors on June 21, 2009

MissettCarlsbadistan’s grand dame of Jazzercise Judi Sheppard Missett is interviewed in today’s The Desert Sun regarding her company’s 40th Anniversary and how it all got started. And it looks like business is going well.

It goes back to 1969, and my belief that dance can bring you health and joy, physically and mentally. What motivated me was an experience I had while teaching a class in Evanston between performances as a professional dancer. Some people stayed for two or three classes, and when I asked them why, they’d say, ‘Judi, I’m not here to be a professional dancer. We just want to have the body of a professional dancer.’ . . . Jazzercise Inc., an exercise phenomenon that grew from a one-woman class to a venture with more than 7,500 franchise locations that posted $93 million in systemwide sales in 2007-08.

Not bad at all. For the rest of the interview click the link.

Is Callaway A Good Recession Buy?

by The Editors on June 20, 2009

Callaway-LogoIn a recent column Reuters’ “blogging money and politics” writer James Pethokoukis asked the question: Is Callaway Golf a good play in the recession?

James goes on to say that the golf business is getting hammered right now and that sales could be down 17 to 20 percent rather than the 5 to 10 percent that Callaway reported.

However, most analysts agree Callaway boasts a strong balance sheet and one of the best golf brands. . . And the new drivers are doing better than expected as the company is using them to clear out unwanted fairway wood inventory, Gilford Securities analyst Casey Alexander said. . . In fact, the stock is likely to rebound as things improve, said Alexander, who has a “buy” rating on the stock and also runs a small hedge fund that holds Callaway shares.

Guess that’s a “yes.”

Carlsbad Chamber’s Ted Owen Interviewed

by The Editors on June 20, 2009

Tedowencolor-SquareThe San Diego News Network’s Helen Kaiao Chang interviewed Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce CEO Ted Owen and got the longtime San Diego Business Journal publisher to answer five questions about his current job.

One of the reasons I was interested in this job is I’ve always had a penchant for wanting to counsel people on how to run a business. I love working with small-business people who have ideas and new products that they have no concept on how to take to the market, how to find financing. . . I get a great deal of satisfaction out of meeting with a person, on a number of occasions, for two to three hours at a time. My biggest satisfaction is … as they leave the chamber and look over their shoulders and wave goodbye, there’s a smile on their face. That’s payment enough for me. We do it for free.

Now that we think about it, Mr. Owen sounds like someone we should have spoken to years ago. . .

Sea Horsing Around At The Aqua Farm

by The Editors on June 14, 2009

The Carlsbad lagoon is a working lagoon and San Diego Union-Tribune writer Michael Burge checks in on one of the lesser known aspects of the aqua farming business: sea horse ranching.

“I call it a living reef,” said John Davis, Carlsbad Aquafarm’s owner. “You go out there, you come out of the water and you’re alive with things.” . . Behind the aquafarm’s gates on the lagoon’s south shore are tanks where the shellfish grow from larvae to mature adults. The 18 employees also cultivate micro-and macroalgae as food, and brine shrimp, the oats for the sea horses. . . .Davis, a tall, silver-haired former Navy and airline pilot, said he began raising the sea horses about five years ago.

Now, Davis sells sea horses to “Legoland’s Sea Life and Birch Aquarium at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, and to wholesalers who sell them to private individuals.” Cowboy up!

Four Seasons Timeshare Owners Worry

by The Editors on June 14, 2009

Biz-Aviara T350The first thing we thought of when we heard about the Battle of Aviara was what would it mean for people who owned timeshares at the Four Seasons Resort and were faced now with the possibility that their timeshare was no longer being attached to a The Four Seasons hotel.

In today’s San Diego Union-Tribune writer Lori Weisberg explores the timeshare side of the disagreement between Aviara owners Broadreach Capital and management company the Four Seasons.

“People are definitely concerned, and everyone I’ve heard from is not happy about it,” said Steve Tuttle, who owns a title company in Utah and has at various times bought 25 time shares around the country, including a week at the Four Seasons Residence Club at the Aviara resort. . . “You buy into a lifestyle that now has the potential to be seriously altered. I worry the maintenance fees may go up and access to hotel facilities could be altered.”

According to the story experts don’t exactly agree on what will happen with the timeshares if the Four Seasons leaves the property. Follow the link for the rest of the story.
