FDA Approval For Invitrogen Test

by The Editors on July 8, 2008

A new genetic test from Invitrogen that can gauge a patient’s response to a new breast cancer drug was approved by The Food and Drug Aministration today, according to a story on CNNMoney.com.

Herceptin was the first of a new class of cancer drugs which destroy cancer cells without also killing normal cells. It works by targeting the HER-2 gene, which encourages tumor growth. However, only about 20 percent of breast cancer patients have cancer caused by the gene. . . .The Spotlight HER2 CISH test from Invitrogen identifies which patients are likely to respond to Herceptin based on the amount of HER-2 gene in their tumors.

Invitrogen stock was up 72 cents on the news.

Tip Top Bidding At Junior Livestock Auction

by The Editors on July 6, 2008

Tip Top Meats owner John Haedrich is a big bidder when it comes to the San Diego County Fair’s junior livestock auction. But, according to a story in the San Diego Union-Tribune, he’s not buying the animals for his business. He’s bidding up the auctions to help the 4-H and Future Farmers of America kids make more money.

Towering over the children at 6 feet, 6 inches, “Big John,” as the auctioneer called him, was an intimidating figure. As the children made their way to Haedrich’s seat to thank him for his help, his gentleness shone through his warm toothy grin. Haedrich gripped the childrens’ hands between his own and offered words of encouragement.

Somehow, we’re not surprised. And it’s probably another reason why we breakfast at Tip Top Meats. Danke von allen uns, John.

Carlsbad’s Own Everyday Edison

by The Editors on July 6, 2008

Arts2Invent280The PBS show Everyday Edisons features passionate, sometimes comically misguided inventors as they attempt to bring their new products to market.

Carlsbadistan resident Michael Diep (who escpaed from from Viet Nam by boat with his family in 1980) is one of the inventors the show will follow in its second season, according to a story in the San Diego Union-Tribune. His product: Emery Cat scratching post.

Michael Diep, who makes his living as a salesman and an entrepreneur, welcomed the chance to work with the program after seeing what happened with the products from the first season. They’re being sold in stories, through mail order or on the Internet. . . .The scratching post came to him after he helped his brother take a cat to the vet for a nail trim. The cat didn’t want to go, which meant a chase, a wrestling match, scratches, flying fur.

You can catch the first episode of Everyday Edisons today at noon on KPBS. The show will continue for the next 13 weeks.

Carlsbad Apple Store: A Walk Through

by The Editors on July 2, 2008

Apple 2

A Carlsbadistan reader did exactly what we should have been doing all along. He walked right in the back door of the new Apple Store at The Forum Shopping Center, snapped a few pictures, and did a little reporting.

The only slight delay in construction is they are waiting for tile and panels. That was the information the construction supervisor gave me. He asked me who I was I said I was from the Cupertino office, what he made of that was strictly his interpretation.

We wish those panels and tile would hurry on up.

Carlsbad Gourmet On The Food Network

by The Editors on July 1, 2008

Carlsbad’s own fine food company The Carlsbad Gourmet will be featured on the first episode of the Food Network’s brand new show Road Tasted with the Neely’s.

The new program is a mix of two shows from last season Road Tasted and Down Home with the Neelys. Now, rather than cooking at home Pat and Gina Neely are hitting the road “in search of the best local, handcrafted foods along with finding all sorts of people, personalities and adventure along the way.” Their first stop: Carlsbad to spend the day with Russ Bruhn in the Carlsbad Strawberry Fields.

Airing July 13, 2008, the show will feature the Carlsbad Gourmet’s Strawberry Jalapeño Spread along with their “Award Winning Ruby Red Strawberry BBQ Sauce.” Not to mention amazing views of both the Strawberry Fields and The Flower Fields.

It’s nice to see Carlsbadistan getting a little national recognition for fine flavors. Now, we just need to taste some to see if it really lives up to the hype.

Carlsbad Apple Store: Inside The Black Box

by The Editors on June 27, 2008

ApplestorepqWe’ve been keeping tabs on the construction going on at The Forum Shopping Center in Carlsbad because it will soon be home to Apple’s newest retail store.

Right now it’s just a big black box. While we were hoping that this location would be open in time for the iPhone 3G launch on July 11, a sneak peek inside the store suggests that we’ll all be waiting a little longer than that.

Then again, who knows. Apple has worked magic in the past and we are talking about the launch of the Jesus Phone 3G with GPS. So anything is possible.

Mariah’s Location Gets Grubby

by The Editors on June 27, 2008

Grubby-1

The sign on the roof at 377 Carlsbad Village Drive is all that’s left of Mariah’s Restaurant. Though the owners of the long-time Carlsbadistan breakfast spot tried fine dining and even went online last fall in hopes getting funding to give the business an upgrade, they just couldn’t pull it off and had to call it quits.

But it’s not all bad news for the old space. A new upscale “quick serve” tacos and beer restaurant (which may be called Grubby’s Tacos) is set to open within the next few weeks. The new restaurant is owned and operated by the same team responsible for Oceanside’s Los Tacos and Grubby’s Diner. They have completely renovated the space (it’s looking solid) and will be kicking down good food (including breakfast with a Mexican groove) and what just might be Carlsbadistan’s largest selection of Mexican beer on tap.

We’ll keep you posted.

10 Grüne Luftballones

by The Editors on June 19, 2008

Balloons-1

No, the Encina Power Station is not throwing a birthday party for big people. They are simply using huge 10 green balloons to show the size of the proposed powerplant that would be the next phase of their continued industrialization of the Agua Hedionda Lagoon, according to a story in the San Diego Union-Tribune.

The new plant would replace three of Encina’s five steam-driven turbines, so the old plant and its stack would remain standing for the foreseeable future. . . . NRG raised a group of green balloons this week to show the location and height of the new plant and its 140-foot-high smokestacks.
. . . The gas-powered plant would consist of a two-part electrical generating system. Gas would be burned to drive a turbine that produces electricity; then heat from that process would drive a steam turbine to produce more power.

Apparently, the new plant could need up to “500,000 gallons of water a day to generate electricity from its steam turbines” and to get this water NRG would like to put in it’s own “desalination plant.” They say they can’t use water from the proposed Poseidon desal because that project has yet to get the proper permits.
