According to the North County Times “More than 100 people poured into a Palomar Airport Advisory Committee meeting Thursday night to discuss a recently completed economic report.”
The report, called the Air Services Situation Review, wasn’t on the agenda, but that didn’t stop about 30 people from voicing their views. The crowd appeared divided, with half saying the report’s suggestions would make the place a safer, more attractive place, and the other half saying that noisy planes were already causing them enough grief.
We love flying out of Palomar: the more flights, the better. But then we don’t live in Bressi Ranch. Click the link for all the details.

Orange 21, the the Carlsbad-based company that owns Spy Optic has announced that they are abandoning their preliminary discussions with No Fear Retail Stores, Inc. regarding the purchase of the company’s 40 retail store fronts.
John Pound, the Co-Chairman of the Board and the Chairman of the Special Committee that evaluated the preliminary discussions said that ‘a transaction does not make sense at this time’. However, the discussions were useful in identifying ‘our short-term goals of focusing organic growth’
Orange 21 CEO Chief Executive Officer of Orange 21 Mark Simo said that “our stockholders would be better served by us continuing to focus on our turn-around efforts.” And we agree with Mark.

The Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce is hosting a 5 Minute Networking session on September 27, 2007 at what we still like to call “Pea Soup Anderson’s“. It sounds like one of the silliest exercises ever. For only $30:
You will have the opportunity to meet up to 20 individuals, one-on-one, in 5 minute increments. In a 5 minute meeting with another individual, you can describe your respective businesses, exchange business cards, and pass on referrals.
Can you imagine our five mintues:
Hi, we’re The Editors of Carlsbadistan. We search the Internet for interesting, odd, shocking, or silly stories related in someway to Carlsbad and we put them up on a website that nobody reads. . . you say you’re a single, 37 year old real estate agent with two kids (five and seven), and a roofing business on the side? Here’s my card, oh, and do you know any really good massage therapists?
Sounds like a bad version of speed dating. Maybe we should go. . . undercover and report back.

NRG Engergy, the company that owns Carlsbad’s tallest structure (and our favorite building in Carlsbadistan) has asked state officials if it can turn up the power output knob on the Encina Powerplant to increase it by 200 megawatts by summer 2010.
Three older units — each of about 100 megawatts capacity and built as long ago as 1954 — will be retired and replaced by newer, more efficient gas-fired units, NRG said. . . Two other existing units, built in the mid-1970s, will remain in operation at the plant.
The company says the units will be 30 percent more efficient and be “well below California’s newly imposed greenhouse gas standard,” NRG will also rename the plant the Carlsbad Energy Center. Locals say Encina. . .

The 34-unit Casa Del Mar Apartment complex at 3515 Roosevelt St was just purchased by the Glenn L. Goldman Family Trust for $6.8 million. The 22-year old complex consists of 28,900 square feet in five two-story buildings. This is the same group who owns the “18-unit Ocean Breeze Apartments on the same Carlsbad corner at 475-497 Chestnut Ave” and bought the 25-unit Pelican Cove apartment complex on Eaton street in Oceanside two years ago.
Apparently real estate is a good investment. . .

Carlsbad is getting another influx of visiting tech knobs next week when Forrester Research brings it’s Technology Leadership Forum 2007 to the La Costa Resort and Spa September 25-26.
Each year, Technology Leadership Forum examines a critical issue at the intersection of business and information technology. This year’s theme, Design For People, Build For Change, takes aim at improving the success of all technology professionals, but its content will focus most closely on these roles: Chief information officer, Application development & program management professional, etc. . .
It’s like the whole resort overrun by our favorite people in the world: “IT professionals.” Watch out Carlsbad these nerds know how to party. . . (We just laughed while typing that. Sorry.)

When the Carlsbad’s Planning Commission meets on Wednesday September 19 at 6 PM they will back on the Ponto express. After postponing a vote on September 5 they are now ready to weigh in on the Ponto Beach Front Vision Plan.
Known formally as the Ponto Beach Front Vision Plan, the document covers a 50-acre region that is mostly owned by three parties — Star Properties of Japan, Wavecrest Resorts of Carlsbad and Ponto Storage owner Dale Schreiber. The area is bordered by Carlsbad Boulevard to the west, the railroad tracks to the east, Batiquitos Lagoon to the south and the Hanover Beach Colony development to the north.
We’re going to go way out on a limb and guess that the plan will get a big thumbs up all around. Good-bye Carlsbad, hello Huntington Beach.

The Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce will be holding their 17th Annual Carlsbad Business Expo in the parking lot of the Westfield Mall at 2525 El Camino Real on September 19, 2007. The event begins at 12 PM and ends at 6. Apparently, this is a great place to “make connections” with other people who are trying to make a living here in Carlsbad. Unfortunately, the Expo is now closed for exhibitors. . . damn, we didn’t even get a $570 booth to hang out in. How is Carlsbadistan.com going to meet anyone now?
More expo details, after the jump.

More bad news for Carlsbad’s little white ball business. If it’s not TaylorMade battling Callaway over patents, it’s Ashworth Golf Company reporting numbers for the third quarter ending July 31: down 6.4 percent over last year with a consolidated net loss of $5.7 million on net revenue of $49.5 million.
In the third quarter of fiscal 2007, the Company’s consolidated gross margin decreased 270 basis points to 38.2% as compared to 40.9% in the third quarter of fiscal 2006. The decrease in consolidated gross margin was driven significantly by a decrease in revenue without a commensurate decrease in overhead expenses being applied to cost of sales.
Guess letting people keep their jobs when sales are down is bad for business. But we don’t golf, so what do we know.
