Well Jerry, we’re delighted too. That’s a nice looking office you’ve got there.

When North Coast Photo founder Richard Shute used his Mastercard on a $22 purchase, he didn’t know that it would win him $100,000 in a national sweepstakes promotion by MasterCard called “Run Your Business, Run Your Life,” but he knew exactly what he would do with the money: complete a $250,000 remodel on the North County’s (and Carlsbad’s) “oldest and largest” specialty photo developing lab. The rest of the story after the jump.

Carlsbad’s hometome trading card and sport memorabilia company Upper Deck has decided to pull Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick from its 2007 trading card releases and removed Vick memorabilia from their online store after allegations of Vick’s involvement with dog fighting have been brought to light.
“Of course we appreciate the fact that Mr. Vick is innocent until proven guilty, but the allegations alone have resulted in an outpouring of very strong emotion within our organization and among the collecting community,” said Kerri Stockholm, Director of Marketing for Upper Deck. “We believe collectors will agree and support this decision as being the best course of action for our football business.”
Guess this rules out the official Michael Vick maimed dog action figures, huh?

Wal-Mart has just purchased a 17-arce site at the corner of College Blvd and El Camino Real where it hopes to build “its most upscale store in the nation,” (which isn’t saying much) according to story in the North County Times.
It will be an absolute paradigm shift,” said Wal-Mart spokesman Aaron Rios in an interview Thursday evening. . . Wal-Mart, which has long sought entry into Carlsbad, recognizes that if it succeeds in building a store in the affluent, carefully planned community, it could not be a typical “big box” store, Rios said.
Upscale? We were trying to think of something funny to say about an upscale Wal-Mart, but the truth is. . . Wal-Mart sucks. And there’s really nothing funny about that.

In a recent press release Carlsbad-based Orange 21 (the parent company of Spy Optic) has announced that it is in discussions with Carlsbad-based No Fear Inc. regarding the purchase of 40 No Fear retail stores. But there is one little glitch: Mark Simo, the Chairman and CEO of Orange 21 is also the founder, former CEO, a director, and stockholder of No Fear, so:
As a result of Mr. Simo’s position, the board of directors of Orange 21 established the Special Committee comprised entirely of independent directors to evaluate and recommend a course of action with respect to the possible strategic transaction.
Anyone want to take any bets on what course of action will be recommended by this “special committee?”

Golf giant Callaway is reporting better-than-expected sales of drivers and irons, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune.
The Carlsbad golf club maker estimated that net sales will be roughly $380 million, up 11 percent from the previous year. Earnings are expected at 50 cents to 53 cents a share, including one-time charges of 2 cents a share.
These results are apparently beating the street.

It’s good to know that Carlsbad’s military industrial complex is alive and well. ViaSat, Inc., a Carlsbad-based producer of “innovative satellite and other digital communication products” just won a $44.9 million contract to deliver “Multifunctional Information Distribution System terminals from The Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command (SPAWAR), San Diego.”
The hard work by our team to provide innovation and best value continues to pay off,” said Paul Baca, vice president of Tactical Data Links at ViaSat. “We feel we are a technology leader in both the airborne and ground based terminal markets because we work closely with our customer and the end users to provide products that best meet their needs.”
And anything that helps our boys stay alive while they’re out killing the enemy is a plus as well:
By gathering information into a digital view of the battlefield, MIDS provides greater situational awareness in combat for the U.S. Navy, Air Force, Army, Marine Corps, and for U.S. defense partners.

Merlin Entertainments, the UK-based entertainment company that owns all four Legoland theme parks is selling off (then leasing back) some of Brittian’s most famous tourist attractions including: Alton Towers, Warwick Castle and Madame Tussauds. The company is not, however, selling Legoland, yet.
. . . Merlin said it would retain some freehold property assets, including its four Legoland parks, many of its Sea Life marine conservation centres – including Birmingham – and its Italian theme park Gardaland.
Merlin Enterainments is owned by The Blackstone group, a US-based private equity fund which recently acquired the Hilton Hotels Corporation.

i-Safe, a Carlsbad-based non-profit organization dedicated to educating to “responsibly take control of their Internet experiences” has enlisted the blackmailed, scandal ridden, and newly crowned Miss New Jersey Amy Polumbo to “help raise awareness about victimization of children on the Internet.”
A group called “The Committee to Save the Miss America Peagent” threatened to go public with the photos if Polumbo did not resign her title. Instead, she went public herself and retained the title.
Amy is a very courageous young woman,” says i-SAFE CEO and Program Director Teri Schroeder. “Online victimization like bullying, predation, even child pornography is far too common on the Internet. Amy’s celebrity will have an impact on students and parents as she raises awareness about these disturbing online issues.”
It’s nice that i-Safe can look past the photos and see the true headline-grabbing promotion they can get from being involved with this salacious scandal.

In these days of Oceania vs. Eurasia style threats from almost fictional sounding terrorist organization it’s nice that local Carlsbad companies are doing their part to make the world a safer place. Invitrogen, the Carlsbad based provider of “essential life science technologies for disease research and drug discovery” has announced:
. . . that their subsidiary Invitorgen Federal Systems has recently signed a $3.9 million contract with the Defense Threat Reduction Agency for the development of a prototype hand-held device for the detection of multiple biothreat agents in a single sample.
Sounds a lot like a Tricorder to us.
