A group of Carlsbad Village business people have formed an organization to help guide the development of Carlsbad’s downtown area it’s called the Carlsbad Village Improvement Partnership.
We have all the potential, being two blocks from the beach, to become a Carmel, Laguna Beach or Newport Beach — to be that kind of upscale beach community. We just need to have the vision and the people to make that happen,” said Jodi Dickson, owner of the Poached Pear and a member of a working group appointed to lay the foundation for the new organization.
We’re not all that interested in Carlsbad becoming Newport or Laguna Beach, but hey, anything to stem the flow of junk shops in the downtown is fine with us.

The Carlsbad-based trading card company has a long history of pulling in the cash, and a recent press release explains just how they do it. On July 17, 2007 Upper Deck is releasing a new Sidney Crosby vinyl action figure. And to celebrate this launch they are also releasing a run of 500 all black & silver figures that are available only to VIP members of the All Star Vinyl Platinum Club. But that’s not all:
Additional benefits of the club include the ability to have a coveted one-hour of early access to all future vinyl figures released [in the online store], enabling fans to scoop up new figures before they are released to the public and a chance to buy even the evasive event-exclusive figures.
How does one join this exclusive club? By paying Upper Deck $100. Upper Deck is now charging people for the “opportunity” to be the first to buy more of their stuff.
Sniff, sniff, sniff? What’s that smell? That’s the pungent aroma of marketing, son.

Most of the time we’re quite happy linking out to other media sites for coverage, however, occasionally we’re bummed when we miss covering an event in person. The Grand Opening of Hensley’s Flying Elephant Pub and Grill, at Tamarack and I-5 is one we should have attended. Luckily for us Amanda Branam and photographer Sean DuFrene of Todayslocalnews.com covered all the goodness as former Flogging Molly accordionist Matt Hensley celebrated with friends and family. It looks like the pro skateboarder is finally settling down.
“I’ve always made a living doing odd things. I made a living skateboarding and playing accordion. I still play accordion, and now I own a pub,” said Hensley, who celebrated the grand opening of Hensley’s Flying Elephant Pub and Grill yesterday in Carlsbad. “Owning this pub is probably the most legitimate thing I’ve done in my life. Or the most common thing.”
Click the link for all the details on Hensley’s Flying Elephant Pub and Grill, and the man himself.

These are the kinds of business stories that don’t mean a whole lot because anyone who cares, already knows. As part of a prearranged 10b5-1 trading plan, Callaway Golf CFO Bradley J. Holiday exercised 18,300 shares today at $12.94 and sold them at $18.97 for a total cash out of approximately $110,349. But we thought we’d link to it anyway as a reminder that some people make a lot more money than we do.

Thanks to rain during qualifying for last week’s Pepsi 400 at the Daytona Speedway, Carlsbad’s favorite NASCAR driver Boris Said and the SOBE/No Fear number 60 car were out of last Saturday’s race. NASCAR rules state that all cars much finish their qualifying runs, or the race seeding will be based on current points. Even though Said had qualified, rain cancelled the runs after only 39 of the 53 cars had taken to the track, according to the North County Times.
“I’m just disappointed; we worked really hard and probably would have won the pole,” the 44-year-old driver explained, showing his frustration. “We would have backed-up last year’s pole and would have shown (potential sponsors) what we can do.”
No word on when Said and the SOBE/No Fear car will race again.

While announcements of hotels featuring Wi-Fi wireless is beginning to remind us of the old motel signs that advertised, “FREE Color TV,” it is good to know when planning a Carlsbad timeshare vacation that Grand Pacific Resorts has signed a deal with 5G Wireless to provide wireless Internet service it all of its resorts.
That means the Carlsbad Inn Beach Resort, Carlsbad Seapoint Resort, and the currently under construction Sheraton Carlsbad Resort will have solid wireless Internet coverage all over their grounds. So bring your laptops and annoy your family by working on your vacation. . . because now you can.

MaxLinear, Inc., a Carlsbad-based technology company which develops radio frequency systems-on-a-chip has announced that they have partnered with UMC to produce the world’s smallest silicon tuner produced to date for mobile TV applications.
We are very excited about our cooperation with UMC as we were able to produce the MxL7001 on CMOS rather than in SiGe, an industry breakthrough,” noted Kishore Seendripu, MaxLinear’s CEO and president.
We have no idea what this really means, but if it brings broadcast TV to our cellphones, well, that’s pretty cool.
