Sylvia At New Village Arts Theatre

by The Editors on June 10, 2015

SylviaCarlsbad’s own New Village Arts Theatre presents the A.R. Gurney’s romantic comedy Sylvia. Here’s what it’s got going on:

When Greg adopts a dog named Sylvia, or rather is adopted by the street-smart mutt, Sylvia (played, alas, by a human) soon turns into a bone of contention for his wife Kate. . . In this romantic comedy by A.R. Gurney, the author of Love Letters, the long-married empty nesters have to dig their way out of an unexpected hole: Kate feels that she’s losing Greg to his adoring new best friend. This imaginative take on a midlife crisis leads to lots of laughs and thoughtful insights on love, marriage, jealousy and canines.

Dog people will likely love this one. Sylvia runs June 6 – June 28, 2015. The New Village Arts Theatre is located at 2787 State St, in Carlsbad, California. Click here to purchase tickets.

Happy Hour Politics And The Border

by The Editors on June 8, 2015

Join Happy Hour Politics on Wednesday, June 17th, 2015 at The Crossing At Carlsbad to meet Michael Page, US Border Patrol Agent. Michael is with the Information and Communication Division, and is the Border Community Liaison Agent in charge of the Northwestern part of the San Diego Sector. He currently works at the I-5 Checkpoint in San Clemente. Be there on June 17th to hear about the Border Patrol and its operations, and the problems and concerns facing these agents on a daily basis. Keep in mind that our San Diego border is the busiest in the nation!

The United States Border Patrol is the mobile, uniformed law enforcement arm of U.S. Customs and Border Protection within the Department of Homeland Security responsible for securing U.S. borders between ports of entry. Since 9/11, the focus of the Border Patrol has changed to detection, apprehension and/or deterrence of terrorists and terrorist weapons. Although the Border Patrol has changed dramatically since its inception in 1924, its overall mission remains unchanged: to detect and prevent the illegal entry of aliens into the United States. Together with other law enforcement officers, the Border Patrol helps maintain borders that work, facilitating the flow of legal immigration and goods while preventing the illegal trafficking of people and contraband.

April 25 Is Arbor Day In Carlsbad

by The Editors on April 17, 2015

Arbor DayThe City of Carlsbad is celebrating Arbor Day, Saturday, April 25, by working with local volunteers to plant trees at Hosp Grove.

The tree-planting activities will take place from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the Hosp Grove Rotary Trailhead, located on Monroe Street between Marron Road and Wickham Way. Volunteer registration begins at 8:30 a.m., with a tree planting demonstration to follow.

In addition to the tree planting, volunteers will learn about the region’s butterflies and plant monarch pollinators in a meadow adjacent to the trailhead. This project will support statewide efforts to restore the population of the overwintering monarch butterfly.

This effort will help Carlsbad retain its status as a Tree City USA for the 11th consecutive year. The designation is given by the National Arbor Day Foundation and acknowledges the city’s ongoing commitment to tree care and urban forest sustainability.

“Arbor Day is a great opportunity to give back to the community and help the environment, while meeting new friends and neighbors,” said Kyle Lancaster, parks superintendent for the City of Carlsbad.

The Arbor Day event at Hosp Grove will feature tree maintenance displays and booths from CAL FIRE, SDG&E, Davey Tree, Davey Resource Group, Western Environmental Consultants, Nissho of California and West Coast Arborists.

Tools will be provided for all volunteers. Volunteers should wear work gloves, a hat, sunscreen and closed toe shoes. It is requested that volunteers bring additional shovels, if possible. Children age 16 and younger must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
