We’ve been hearing rumors that there may be some unofficial fireworks going off near the beach come July 4. We’ve seen them before and they were insanely professional. Carlsbadistan’s finest, however, seem to frown on those festivities. That’s why this year we’re going to watch the Red, White, & Boom fireworks at Legoland first.
The Legoland fireworks show is going down at 8:30 PM, July 4, 2010. The best place to view them is from the lower parking lot at the Sheraton Carlsbad Resort & Spa. Trust us, you really don’t want to get any closer than that.

We have to admit that much of Carlsbadistan’s TGIF Jazz in the Park is deja vu all over again. (This is probably the second or third time we’ve said that, too.) But with Friday’s (July 2, 2010) concert by Ricardo Lemvo & Makina Loca it kind of makes sense.
When Lemvo takes the stage at Stagecoach Park he will be playing Jazz in the Park for the fourth time. And that tells us a couple things: One, Carlsbadistan loves Ricardo Lemvo & Makina Loca, and more importantly Lemvo apparently loves Carlsbadistan as well.
For those who’ve missed it here’s the short version:
Lemvo is a Congo-born artist of Angolan ancestry who is “the embodiment of the Afro-Latin Diaspora which connects back to Mother Africa via the Cuban clave rhythm. Lemvo is truly multi-cultural and equally at home singing in English, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Lingala, and Kikongo. . . Since forming his Los Angeles-based band Makina Loca in 1990, Lemvo has refined his craft and vision, raising his joyous voice with strength, singing songs that celebrate life, and most importantly, inspiring his audiences to let loose and dance away their worries.
We’ve probably said this before, too, but if you’re only going to attend one Jazz in the Park this summer, it should probably be this one.

Perennial Carlsbadistan blues performer’s Ruby & The Red Hots kick off the 25th summer of TGIF Jazz In The Park opening show at Stagecoach Park on the Eastern Front tonight June 25, 2010 at 6 PM.
Ruby Presnell can be counted on to play Jazz in the Park every single summer it appears. “The First Class Sultry Lady of Blues,” has shared the stage with all the greats including Etta James, Junior Wells, Buddy Guy, John Lee Hooker, as well as the San Diego Symphony. And tonight, she’ll be sharing the lawn with all of us.
Remember: low-back chairs, bug spray, and plenty of wine and cheese to share with your neighbors are always a good idea at Jazz in the Park. We’ll see you there.

Food is the theme of this year’s San Diego County Fair in Del Mar. Food, cooking, produce, products, and anything edible from San Diego County. Organizers what all of us to “Taste The Fun.” We did and this is what we discovered:
- Do not arrive early on Free For The Unemployed Day at the fair. Those people are so eager for a handout that they begin lining up at the front gate a half hour before the doors even open.
- The veggie Hot Dogs On A Stick taste just as fun as the turkey dogs (we always support Carlsbadistan businesses).
- Deep fried butter along with chocolate covered bacon is available and popular.
- Hot girls ride English style.
- Mini donuts rock.
- The best place to drink is inside the air-conditioned Taste The Fun building in the back right hand corner. We saw a lot of frazzled mom’s up against the back wall sipping a little mother’s helper.

Carlsbadistan’s New Village Arts Theatre drops into a steamy Tennessee Williams classic this Saturday May 29, 2010 with Summer And Smoke.
[The play]. . . tells the story of Alma (Jo Anne Glover), a minister’s daughter, and John (John DeCarlo), the hedonistic doctor next door. In her search for spirituality and lasting love, Alma is confronted with John’s need for sensual fulfillment. Their turbulent relationship becomes an emotional battle of wills that alters each of them irrevocably. Riveting and intense, this masterpiece takes the audience through the heart of a Mississippi summer.
Wonder if anyone gets kissed on the veranda? We’re guessing, yes. Opening night is May 29, 2010 at 8 PM and the ticket price includes a reception with the cast and crew following the show. Or, check it out tonight and tomorrow during “pay-what-you-can-previews” starting at 8 PM.

Young guests visiting SEA LIFE during the Dr. Seuss themed World Oceans Day celebration can take part in fun, hands-on, ocean-related activities throughout the day while interacting with SEA LIFE educators and learning more about our oceans and the creatures that call them home. The highlight of the days’ activities is a special dive show featuring an underwater reading of Dr. Seuss’ One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish! Sporting ‘Seussian attire’, the exploration diver will be using an underwater communications system allowing guests to speak to the diver through the viewing window while the diver reads aloud to them from inside the Aquarium.

[Editors’ Note: Due to a technical glitch the photos were not available yesterday. It has been fixed. Please try the link again. No one is sorrier that we are.]
Carlsbad Beach Fest featured a typical collection of Carlsbadistan artists, musicians, lifeguards, and a whole bunch of people who are not afraid to pick up trash on the beach. Thanks to everyone who came out to beautify our beaches (even if you were just laying there in the sun).
