Exene Cervenka At Hensley’s

by The Editors on November 12, 2009

XceneExene Cervenka, the grande dame of the LA punk scene will be playing Hensley’s Flying Elephant Pub & Grill on Saturday night November 14, 2009 and North County Times writer Stephen Rubin took the opportunity to check in with the singer/songwriter who has suffered great loss recently as well as annouced that she has been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis.

I appreciate things a little bit more that I took for granted, like waking up every day, walking out the front door and going, ‘Wow, it’s a beautiful f—- day. . . .”It doesn’t change anything,” she said of the diagnosis. “It’s a mystery that can strike any part of you at any moment. And some people it rarely strikes, and some people it’s constant, and they’re in agony and it’s a horrible thing; I’m somewhere in the middle.”

Exene plays with Frank Drennan and Cindy Wasserman of Dead Rock West. Show starts at 8 PM. Tickets are $10.

Carlsbad’s Army and Navy Academy and The Rotary Club of Carlsbad presented a Veterans’ Day Military Review and Wreath Laying Ceremony today (November 11, 2009) on the John Maffucci Field at 11:00 AM.

Several hundred people, veterans, active military, and civilians alike, filled the schools grandstands for the an hour-long presentation that included words from the Army and Navy Academy’s President Brigadier General Stephen Bliss, a speech by Brigadier General David Brahms, and a proclamation from Mayor Bud Lewis.

111109 34Brigadier General Brahms, USMC Ret. Summed up his speech with a message that we all can agree with.

“Today is a day to pray. To pray for the young people who may soon be veterans,” he said. “Young people like those arrayed behind me today. I pray on your behalf that you never have to see and experience the horrors of war. For if we as veterans will tell the stories of those horrors perhaps that prayer will come to pass. God Bless our great country and those who have heeded it’s call in times of trouble.”

Army and Navy Academy cadets participated in the full Military Review and The Red Stars Formation Team did a fly-over salute.

LPGA Coming To La Costa Spa & Resort?

by The Editors on November 6, 2009

Lacosta LogoIf a story in Sports Business Daily is to be believed, Carlsbadistan may be getting a stop on the Ladies Professional Golf Association tour in 2010, but Golf Digest’s John Strege isn’t sure that’s such a great idea.

Is the LPGA sure it wants to be doing this? Apathy was always an issue when the men played at La Costa, even with Tiger Woods in the field — hence the the Mercedes Championship wound up on Maui and the Match Play Championship moved to Arizona. Why would anyone believe the LPGA would deliver a different result there?

After losing the Acura Tennis Classic we all need some major sporting event in Carlsbad, don’t we?

Carlsbad Street Faire Photos

by The Editors on November 1, 2009

We could not have asked for a more perfect fall day for a street faire in Carlsbadistan. With the time change everyone was up early. The sun was out. The streets were littered with smashed pumpkins. And the Chargers are going to destroy the Raiders. Could we ask for anything better?

The faire seemed bigger, better, and more well attended. We’ve been rough on the faire in years past, but today we found some pretty amazing gifts, including the custom, retro, hot rod kids clothes from Whiskey Doll Couture (pictured above).

The meal, which includes pancakes, sausage, coffee and juice, will be served between 7 a.m. and noon.

If you’re going to park in The Neighborhood, please be kind to the residents. They live here. And we’ll see at the Faire.

It was a spooky night in the Carlsbadistan Neighborhood. There was the Nightmare on Cherry Street for the over 21 crowd (complete with butterflies, saucy teachers, blow-up dolls, and Jem), the Garfield Graveyard for the kids, and the Sycamore Scare for a little of both.

Give Blood Get Candy At Farmers Market

by The Editors on October 25, 2009

Apr0909 39This Saturday, October 31, 2009, the Carlsbad Village Farmers Market will be hosting a Halloween Party and Blood Drive.

Free Re-usable Goodie Bags will be given to the first 50 people in costumed Trick-or-Treaters. Healthy treats will be given out by the Farmers’ Market vendors to everyone in costume. A Costume Contest will be held at 3pm with prizes donated by Farmers Market vendors. The Blood Drive —sponsored by Kaiser Permanente—will run from 1-5pm.

Visitors can also pick up the official 2009 Carlsbad Village Halloween Goodie Guide listing all the Village merchants who will be handing out candy. We’re guessing they’d like the kids to lay off the tricking in the Village and stick to the treating, but we’re not sure. For more info call: 760-687-6453 or 760-434-2553.
