Art Surfing Empty Store Fronts

by The Editors on April 9, 2009

Apr0909 56On May 1, 2009 (two days before the spring Carlsbad Street Fair) the two-month long Carlsbad Art Surf kicks off. What? Art Surf is a public art walk project through the streets of The Village sponsored by the Carlsbad Village Improvment Partnership, according to a story in the San Diego Union-Tribune.

Wanting to transform vacant storefront windows into something cheerful, Carlsbad Village property owners have invited artists to sign up to create window murals as part of Art Surf, a two-month art walk that kicks off May 1. . . “I think the idea really was, if you drive down a street and you see lots of empty lots or empty windows, you get an impression that it’s not alive, or it’s not worth coming to (visit) again,” said Robin Young, executive director of the Carlsbad Village Business Association.

We’re not so sure that drawing attention to empty storefronts by letting artists paint on the windows in the best idea, but while they’re at it maybe someone could paint the front windows at Ella Grace in the Village Faire Mall. When we walked by this morning they were packing up and shutting down the business.

EGGstravaganza At Poinsettia Park

by The Editors on April 9, 2009

On Saturday, April 11, 2009 from 10 AM to 1 PM Carlsbadistan is getting together for one of its biggest holiday events of the year, the Eggstravaganza at Poinsettia Park. Here’s all the info.

Join us for live music, fun games, exciting arts and crafts, and food. Come enjoy an amazing magic show, bounce houses, a giant slide, a chance to “soak the bunny” and much more. This year, instead of an egg hunt, we will be featuring a fun “Egg Scramble” activity. No need to rush to get to the event on time; the “Egg Scramble” will be ongoing from 10:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. In the interest of safety and fairness, children ages 2-5 years old will participate on one field and children 6-9 years old will participate on another. Groups of about 20 kids at a time will surround the perimeter fence line waiting for the whistle which will launch them on a scramble to collect as many eggs as they can until they are gone.

Crafts, Fun Zone, Bunny Balloon Soak, and entry into the “Egg Scramble” activity require an activity card that can be purchased at our Information Booth for $5. Food will be an additional cost. No family will want to miss this special event!
For more information on the event please call Rachael Shay at (760) 602-7519 or e-mail Rachael.Shay@CarlsbadCA.gov

The Carlsbad 25,000 Arrives On April 5

by The Editors on March 26, 2009

Crw-3397-Tm.Jpg

The “World’s Fastest 5k” returns to Carlsbadistan on April 5th, 2009 as our streets are again taken over by thousands of ground pounders in the Carlsbad 5000. But this year there is another twist. It’s called the All Day 25k.

“We wanted to offer a new longer-distance aspect of the race that could serve as a training option for runners preparing for a marathon or half marathon later in the season,” said Shannon Davis, Event Manager. “It will make the 5K course into a challenging 25K, thus allowing our more serious runners a chance to participate in a fast, seaside training run while still taking advantage of one of Southern California’s most exciting races.”

Limited to only 150 competitors the All Day 25K will see runners racing in five of the day’s 5k runs. No thanks. Click here for photos from last year, or follow the jump for all the details. [click to continue…]

Be Aggressive: Still Life With Pom Poms

by The Editors on March 25, 2009

Beaggressive1

A new play about cheerleaders opens at the New Village Arts Theatre on April 4, 2009. Be Aggressive, by Annie Weisman, is the story of Laura, a 17-year-old cheerleader whose life turns around when her mother is killed in a car accident, according to Dramatists.com.

. . . she is thrust into the role of caregiver for her precocious younger sister, Hannah, and her brittle father, Phil. Escape comes in the form of a ferocious fellow cheerleader. Leslie has a brochure about the Spirit Institute of the South, a two-week intensive where they can learn real cheer, the kind with Bible belt intensity. All they need is two weeks and a thousand bucks.

We won’t tell you the rest except to say that the story takes place in “Vista Del Sol” which most will recognize as San Diego. The play is directed by Kristianne Kurner and features NVA ensemble members Dana Case, Amanda Morrow, Daren Scott, Amanda Sitton and Rachael VanWormer with Caitlin Kunkle, Rachel Robinson and Alyssa Schindler.

Be Agressive runs April 4 to 26, 2009 nightly at 8 PM Thursday through Sunday with a matinee on Saturday at 3 PM click here for tickets. (Pay what you want previews are April 2 and 3)
