Sunday Party In Your Park

by The Editors on September 14, 2007

Party SmThis Sunday, September 16, is Party In-Your-Park day in Carlsbadistan. All you have to do is show up at one of the following parks with whatever you want to bring: Pine Park, Stagecoach Park, Hidden Canyon Park, or Poinsettia Park.

Free admission for all. Just bring your own picnic, family & friends and plan on meeting all of your neighbors. There will also be old-fashioned, picnic-style games for all ages.

As much as we prefer hanging out in the park when they are empty, if you’re a social family you’ll probably have a great time.

Carlsbad Business Parking Lot Extravaganza

by The Editors on September 13, 2007

Biz Expo
The Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce will be holding their 17th Annual Carlsbad Business Expo in the parking lot of the Westfield Mall at 2525 El Camino Real on September 19, 2007. The event begins at 12 PM and ends at 6. Apparently, this is a great place to “make connections” with other people who are trying to make a living here in Carlsbad. Unfortunately, the Expo is now closed for exhibitors. . . damn, we didn’t even get a $570 booth to hang out in. How is Carlsbadistan.com going to meet anyone now?
More expo details, after the jump.

The goal of the walk is to raise $1.2 million for multiple sclerosis research. And currently they are only a couple hundred thousand short. If you’d like to donate money to sponsor a walker, click here.

The Guilty Generation at Leo Carrillo

by The Editors on August 30, 2007

Leofilm

On Friday evening August 31 the Leo Carrillo Ranch Friday Night Film Festival will present the 1931 film Guilty Generation which follows 1930’s era gangsters in a premise based William Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet. In this film, Leo Carrillo plays Mike Palmiero.

John Smith is a young architect who changed his name from Marco Ricca when he realized that being a notorious bootlegger’s son was not likely to help his career. Maria Palmiero’s father is also a bootlegger, and she’s finding that the high society circles she wants to move in are not very welcoming to her. Naturally, John and Maria’s fathers are waging a brutal gang war back in New York, and naturally John and Maria fall in love.

Bring a low back chair, warm clothes, a flashlight, and a blanket. The movie starts promptly at sunset with a showing of the Cisco Kid before the main feature. Admission is free and hot dogs, chips, popcorn, cotton candy, and sodas can be purchased at the Barn Theater.

The next two Fridays will feature the following films: If You Could Only Cook, and I Promise to Pay.

A Total Eclipse of the Moon

by The Editors on August 27, 2007

Eclipse

Sorry about the short notice, but tomorrow morning (August 28) starting at 12:53 AM the moon will begin its trip into the shadow created by the earth. By 3:37 AM the moon will be completely eclipsed. The good news is that Carlsbadistan is one of the epic locations to watch the entire event. Here’s what NASA has to say:

All of North America will witness some portion of the eclipse, but western observers are favored. The early penumbral or umbral phases will be in progress at moonset for observers in Maritime Canada. From the eastern USA, the Great Lakes region and Ontario, the Moon sets in total eclipse. Only observers to the west of the Rockies (including Alaska) will be treated to the entire event.

If we’re up (which we doubt) we’ll try and snap a photo. All the Monday night revelers might want to stay up a little longer after stumbling home from Dini’s and check it out from the sea wall.
