Last night at about 6:45 PM the pilot of a Cessna decided to use the 78 (just west of El Camino Real) as an emergency landing strip. According to the Union Tribune the plane:
. . . struck some cars before flipping over in the center divider, the California Highway Patrol said. . . The pilot reported a mayday before hitting the freeway in eastbound lanes about 6:45 p.m. Witnesses reported that some cars were struck.
One person was reportedly injured in a car that was clipped by the plane’s wing. And here is the rest of the story.

Every day we learn new things about this place. For instance, Carlsbad-based Phoenix Footwear Group, Inc. (a company we’ve never heard of before) just sold their Royal Robbins division (which they bought in 2003 for $11.7 million) to Kellwood Company for $40 million in cash (subject to a working capital adjustment). Not a bad transaction.
Commenting on the transaction, Jim Riedman, Chairman of Phoenix Footwear Group, Inc., said, “Royal Robbins is an outstanding brand with strong revenues and a very loyal following, and we are very pleased with a three-fold return we expect to achieve on this asset in just over a three-year period.
Pheonix’s other brands include Tommy Bahama Footwear, Trotters, SoftWalk, Strol, H.S. Trask, and Altama footwear, and Chambers Belts.
Okay, so we’ve heard of Tommy Bahama before. And now we know the rest of the story.

Ashworth, Inc. the Carlsbad based “on-course” golf apparel and sportwear line reported their second quarter 2007 financials today and the news was bad in pretty much every quarter. Net revenue was down $7 million, the net loss for the quarter was $2.5 million and their consolidated gross margin decreased “650 basis points” to 38.8 percent. But CEO Peter Weil is optimistic of course:
Throughout the second quarter, we continued to execute on the strategic initiatives our Board and management team identified during the second half of 2006. While we continue to face challenges, we believe the initiatives being implemented will help better position the Company for sustainable and profitable growth,” he said in the press release. “Despite the challenges in the second quarter, we are excited about the future of Ashworth. We have taken a number of steps that are designed to build a more efficient and effective organization, including the recently announced personnel changes.”
Spin, Peter, spin.

Carlsbad High School’s Spencer Hood, 18, graduated last week with honors and a 4.1 grade point average. Now, he’s on his way to Dartmouth where says he’d like to put the “stereotype of dumb-jock to rest.”
I always get labeled as the ‘football player,’ the ‘dumb jock,’ but that’s not the case,” he said last week. “It’s a general misconception that athletes are not well-rounded, that they don’t focus on academics. People are surprised when they see someone who can excel at both.
Hood, who was named scholar-athlete of the year and defensive football player of the year, has a fraternal twin brother, Gordon, also graduated with honors and is off to Brown. Yeah, they’re a double threat.
Congrats to the entire Hood family.

After eating at the new Stone Brewing World Bistro & Gardens at 1999 Citracado Parkway, in Escondido (occasionally we’re forced to escape the June gloom) we were reminded of the old dinner party aphorism: send the beer drinkers out for the booze while the wine drinkers do the cooking.
Unfortunately, at the Stone World Bistro the beer drinkers are not only brewing (at which they obviously excel), but they’re also cooking. In this process a little too much beer is spilled into the food. Seems like most every item on the menu has a splash of suds in it: the dipping sauces (cheese and barbeque), the batter used to deep fry the mashed potato balls and onion rings, and even the ketchup. It’s almost as if someone is in the kitchen simply spraying beer down the whole line. (Note to beer drinking cooks: not everything is better with beer.)

On Saturday, June 23, 2007 (which is a pretty big day around here for reasons that will go undisclosed at this point) the Cannon Art Gallery is hosting one of its hands on art-making events for the whole family. It’s called the Family Open Studio and it will be held from 11 AM to 2 PM in the courtyard of the Carlsbad Library at 1775 Dove Lane (the big one out near Alga and El Camino Real).
First there is an art exhibition (this week featuring art from employees of the William D. Cannon Art Gallery) and then it’s time for everyone to kick back and make some art (with everything you need supplied by the gallery). For more information call the Arts Info Line at 760/434-2904 or click here.

This Friday evening (June 22, 2007) from 6-8 PM Carlsbad’s TGIF Jazz In The Parks kicks off it’s 22nd season with Eddie “Devil Boy” Turner at Stagecoach Park. Turner’s guitar work has been described as “otherworldly,” “scorching,” and “chilling.” If his website is any judge, then we’re pretty sure he’s been down to the crossroads, if you know what we mean.
His ethereal style is an amalgam of the Afro-Cuban rhythms of his heritage and the music that influenced him as a teenager: Chicago blues, jazz, r&b and psychedelic rock. The Cuban-born singer/guitarist cut his teeth in several rock bands contributing what Slate magazine describes as “spacey-yet-resounding solos.”
We’ll see you there Friday night.

Today is the day to celebrate all those guys who have decided that breeding has it’s advantages. In a world where more children does not necessarily mean economic advantage it is good to know that a few good men are still choosing to have families, to love them, and to support them. We’re saying thanks today for all the things Dad’s do. All those things that go unnoticed all year long. Especially all those things that we never noticed until we become fathers ourselves.
Thanks, Dads. Happy Father’s Day. . . Now, if there was only some surf we could all catch a couple waves in celebration of rad Dadness.

Using a 1980 law designed to curb newspaper hawkers on Carlsbad’s city streets, the Carlsbad Police department has begun ticketing day laborers who are looking for work in North County. Apparently, homeowners near The Country Store on El Camino Real have been complaining.
Police Capt. Mike Shipley said the department has received numerous complaints from homeowners in the area about day laborers. . . “The migrant issue is a broad issue. Part of our job is to respond to complaints,” Shipley said. “The El Camino Real and Carlsbad Village Drive area is an extremely high complaint area.”
While the law does not specify a fine, a judge last week “ordered a day laborer to pay a fine of $192 including court fees.” Leave it to our legal system to punish those who are simply looking for work.
